I am posting up my findings for future reference. As these XC90's start coming down in price i am sure we will be getting more and more fellow volvo owners making the move to the xc90. Many will have AWD problems and haldex problems.

If you got a DEM-0006 code that means your Haldex pump (#3) is bad. I got one used from www.vwvortex.com turns out that the haldex units on audi tt's A4's S4's R32's (circa 2008) basically the AWD vw/audi family with these 2nd generation haldex units. They carry the same pump, the same pressure sensor but i am not 100% sure on the haldex unit itself. The unit i have is from a 2008 VW r32, did not try and use it since i ran out of time today at work. Volvo wanted $290USD for the pump and $115USD for the pressure sensor. I got DEM, pump, sensors and shipping for $100USD I know all the sensors from the VW works 100% in my 2003 XC90 T6 AWD Haldex unit. I did not try the DEM like i said above, no time.

If you get a DEM-0007 code it is a pressure sensor bad. thats the smallest sensor in the picture below #6. attached is the TNN for a DEM-0007 code.

Below is a picture of the haldex pump and all the internal haldex sensors, fluid guide, haldex break down.

So if you need to fix the AWD sensors and pumps, i did all the research and sensors will interchange with VW's. If you look closely at the haldex connectors it will have VW logos on them! From the parts breakdown it doesnt show the weird long sensor with the brown connector end. i dont know what that one is called but it also has the same part number stamped on it like the pressure sensor.

BTW- #10 is a filter and Volvo never has these in stock and when i wanted to order it there was a 4 week national backorder. vovlo parts manager says they never change it, i just some how feel better when it is changed out while i am in there, its $18USD

I've been workin here at the volvo dealer 5 yrs now, don't recall anyone ever changing #3 the haldex pump. Almost every xc90 has the dem code for the pressure sensor and inop all wheel drive. The dem itself is a rare thing I've done software updates and no returns from any customers

DEM-0006 is a defective Pump, DEM-0007 bad pressure sensor

Got both codes, got both items = got NOT codes

Hey well now you have heard of a bad pump. Maybe in Sunny California, you dont see pumps go bad. I just know my pump was bad and i changed it and now i get working AWD :)

If you have a code doesn't necessarily mean bad pump. Just tryin to be cost effective we get maf codes and fuel trim codes for dirty etm's but we don't go selling maf's because it says defective maf

LOL to the cleaning of the ETM. LOL to the MAF, LOL @ stealership. I dont go changing parts because i like to or that i have a bunch of money to throw away. if that was the case i'd go get butt fucked by the dealer and change out the haldex like they originally said for $2000. Like i said, DEM-0006 is a bad pump, rare code. DEM-0007 bad pressure sensor common code along with the TNN previously posted. These codes are not picked up with a regular OBD2 scan tool as you know. Generally speaking, getting codes from a Dice/Vida/BSR PPC, they right on with what is bad.

Dealership is in business to make money, i on the other hand is trying to save money. Regardless of you saying it may not have been the pump. I changed it out and reset the code and now magically it is gone. I invested in a PPC BSR scan tool so i dont have to go to the stealership and have them butt fuck me to scan the car each and every time for $102. You just said you have never seen a pump go bad. Therefore you can only give and OPINION. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. I am stating facts and how to fix these problems

dealership info  .......or Volvo battle field info :) !

I think I know who I can trust 99% of the time.

This is good info to know since these Haldex systems will start seeing more 200K+ in a few years now. I'm hoping it wont be as bad as the 98-02 (exc. S60) systems. I will make sure to keep this info around when my old shop get's these issues in.

thats the type or response i was looking for. :) wasn't looking for the "we never see this crap at the dealer" hahahaha

I just wanted to relay some good info and how to Frankenstein a repair if we are backed up into a corner! Since these Haldex systems are really close kissing cousins of the Audi/VW's. Dont know if the parts are cheaper or not. Also found out that the Haldex modules get swapped out for more performance units from HPP aka haldex performance products !! they actually change the power distribution from low side of 80/20 to a 50/50 split! with dyno charts to show it!! must be great at the track. wonder if these units can work on the S60R?

Turns out that alot of audi/VW's get scrapped and these DEM sensors and parts a dime a dozen vs a needle in a haystack for us volvo peoples!!

Actually dem0006 is feed pump faulty signal. If u follow fault tracing you can activate the pump and if it works u have a faul,ty dem, which comes with a new pressure sensor since that's usually the case...if you wannna believe u had a bad part that's cool not my time wasted I'm just stating that and tryin to help out who evers informed. Your bad experiences at a dealer aren't the same for everyone else.I'm not a kno it all either I'm just tellin u what we see....

What about the connection this VW DEM module to the brains of your volvo? Does it really fit to volvo ECU system? Volvo/Haldex boys are cunning boys, they can lock a unit for a brand, aren't they?

dont know if it works, they "look" the same, dont know if there is propietery software loaded on it. i would think the dealer could load software on it. unfortunatly i dont have such hardware!

I am having the same type problem withthe Ford freestyle AWD my wife drives. It uses the volvo haldex rear and throws a p1889 ford code for low oil pressure. I started out changing the oil and filter in it at 80k miles, Ford calls it a lifetime oil, Im not convinced. It still worked when warm but would throw the code in the mornings. Ford is worthless on assistance, since the Ford Volvo split the only help is to replace the complete haldex for 3-4k. I am certain it is repairable if i can find the right info.

I took out the DEM and replaced the oil sensor with a new volvo unit. Once I did that and reinstalled the DEM it wont communicate with the traction control unit any more.

I was reading the post above and it looks like I could test the pump and the haldex unit by directly powering the pump and seeing if it engages properly correct? if the unit locks in with power to the pump then odds are the dem is the fault and not communicating with the TC and the rest of the system. I can get a new dem from ford for $750, normally $1100 if you dont get the discount. Swapping the dem for a new unit Automatically requires software update from what ive read. If the original DEM is removed and reistalled, could it possibly need software reloaded? The error right now is communication based and not a hard code like the oil pressure. Is there a way to test the DEM module itsself? I have heard comments about a bad solder joint in the haldex DEM that can be repaired but it must be under the sealed tin cover.

I know its not a volvo but the failing part is the same. Any thoughts on testing it would be appreciated, i just cant afford to put 3-4 grand in it right now and i cant believe that its not a servicable item.

Thanks for your input
Sean

Let me know if you end up needing a DEM unit. I had mine out and sent it to be rebuilt because of moisture in the unit at XeMODex at a cost of $499 and hit a deer and totalled the volvo a week later. It worked perfect after I installed it and takes all of 5 minutes to replace. I had a 2004 XC90 T6 with DEM 30783132. It carries a lifetime warranty from XeMODex and I would be happy to negotiate a price. I can also email pictures of the unit.

Thanks,
Rick
