My original drain plug housing is stripped and I have been using a temp drain plug for a while 12 plus months. Im wanting to get a tap kit or replace the pan (a real PITA I understand). The last oil change the guy told me that I would need at least a 19.5mm tap. Any ideas as far as solutions. A new pan would cost me around $350 to $400. Trying to avoid such a large expendature for this. Any ideas/suggestions resource links would be appreciated!

Get a pan from the junkyard on the super cheap and replace those crappy oil pan o-rings while your there

Will head to the auto part store tomorrow to inquire on a tap kit...will do the junk yard exploration as a back up plan for now...Thank you!!

Yeah, what he said . Might as well fix it right. Just had the pan off of my 2000 last night to replace the sump o-rings. Wasn't having too much trouble yet, but for $20 I figured I'd do it before winter for preventive maintenance. Not too bad on a 5 cylinder, its the S80 that's a bit tight . Had to pull the front mount and torque rod only (sub frame left in place). Mine actually had an o-ring misaligned from the factory, causing the pan to pinch the edge of the seal. Had to be causing a leak . Anyway, not a bad job really.

I covered this a few years ago... there is enough room too tap that pan for a 240 drain plug and seal ...(hint) the threads on a 240 plug are standard not metric

Since your going to have to pull your pan anyway, I have a spare oil pan for your car if you would like to keep oem, also has the magnetic drain plug

If you want to replace with oem drain pan, since you have to pull the pan anyway let me know I have an extra one for your car

Just bought a 2003 XC70 with a stripped oil pan, has anyone had success with tapping it to 19.5mm?

Why not helicoil it? Also finding an SAE tap is way easier than finding a good 19.5mm tap and then you already have a reliable source of drain plugs (240).

For info:
The 240 oil drain plug should be 3/4-16 (confirm this)
Mcmaster.com part number 2521A668 is a 3/4-16 taper hand tap. It will work perfectly for you.
You'll want an 11/16" drill if you desire to pre-drill it (I wouldn't unless it clearly makes sense to do so when you are under there).

Go straight, go slow, use tapping fluid (made for aluminum) and you'll be set.

Just confirmed that a 240's plug is indeed 3/4-16

I would not do a helicoil over retapping. Even if you do not have a tap and die set you can get by with the cheapest tap on earth.
http://www.amazon.co...21456591&sr=8-1 <-- more than enough for a one time use on an oilpan.

Next person who finds this post searching for fix, shoot some photos and I will set you up with a years supporting membership.
