Hope y'all had a wonderful Holiday break (if you had one that is). My restaurant is closed for a month between December 19 and January 22nd so I like to fill up my free time with car projects during the winter break Posted Image This year the 855 is getting a little drivetrain overhaul.

I've had my white 850 for 3 years now. I bought it for $500 back in November of 07, put thousands of dollars into fixing and upgrading it but the junkyard engine was never good and the auto tranny, well, is an auto tranny and needs to go. I had all the parts accumulated last year but wound up transplanting everything from the 98T5M donor into the 98R for a FWD manual swap. Last year I had little confidence in my abilities to do the swap but several of you encouraged me, Justin and Hussein were always available when I had a question. This year I have much more confidence. (probably just enough to do some real damage to the 850 Posted Image

Here's what I have in store for the 850: power goal is 300 at the wheel(s) with a better platform to upgrade later if desired...and of course there will be a desire : )

EDIT:
  • M56L with 134K, short shifter, etc.
  • 02 B5234T3 out of a C70 with 87K, disabled VVT
  • 18T 19T large angled outlet
  • Turbo Tuner ARD BLue tune
  • New angled 3" DP, zeitronix wideband, EGT
  • Profec EBC Gizzmo ICB-r stock BCS :)
  • Front mount intercooler
  • Snow performance Alcohol injection w/ variable controller
  • NA throttle body/intake mani
Right now I'm waiting on TT so I can drive my 850 over to the garage, it's currently ECU-less. It should be coming this week sometime then the fun will start.

For the time being here some pics of the 02 2.3L

See if you can buy a 99/00 rear coolant pipe.
That or chop off that silly press connection for the coolant supply to the turbo.
Other wise your connections to the turbo wont work and then blah blah blah blah .

Just get that ahead of time

Slap the ECU from the 98 to move the 855 if need be. It'll throw CEL's but it'll move.

Good to see this thread, definitely interested in seeing what you are able to do with that platform.

Nice engine, it's good to see your plans actually getting somewhere

Will you be keeping COP with TT, or going to a distributor based spark setup? Switching to the older style manifold, or making your own? How far will this engine be opened up before everything gets put back together? Keeping the internals intact, getting a hone and fresh rings, replacing the rods and pistons, or something else entirely?

Also, be sure to double check the valve lash. The cams in my '02 didn't look so hot, it seems that the PO never bothered to have the valve lash checked and tightened up.

no COP, unortunately it's still not available through turbo tuner (hardware costs are too high apparently)

Older mani off a 96 NA with NA TB and 960 plate, manifold spacer, gasket matched

Engine will not be opened up at all. It's getting dropped in as is, only changes will be the distributor and VVT blanking plate.

thanks for the heads up about the lash :)

Last time I talked to CJ about it, back in October, he said that the COP support was basically finished up, and pricing was being figured out. Haven't heard anything since then. Luckily adding a distributor doesn't seem too hard.

I'm pretty sure you'll also need to swap the cam position sensor piece that is attached to the rear of the camshaft from the newer VVT style to the older one.

As for the VVT, leaving the solenoid on and unplugged will effectively lock the position of the cam in the fully retarded position, and you can adjust timing manually on the gear like normal. The VVT adjusts timing by opening the solenoid valve to let oil into one side of the gear to to advance the shaft. The drag of the camshaft should force the VVT timing to full retard when there is no pressure acting on it. Then when I finally get my VVT controller made up, you can just throw it on.. Or you can just use a blanking plate to be 100% certain about it not moving

Adjustment slots on the VVT gear:
