"A new organization has sprung up in Texas to dole out scholarships to a group of people it says needs them - white men.Called the Former Majority Association, the group stemmed from one man's struggle to find scholarships he was eligible for. Most, he claimed, were reserved for women or visible minorities.

"We have a very simple mission: to fill in the gap in the scholarships offered to prospective students. There are scholarships offered for almost any demographic imaginable," reads the grooup's mission statement.

"In a country that proclaims equality for all, we provide monetary aid to those that have found the scholarship application process difficult because they do not fit into certain categories or any ethnic group."

The group will award five $500-scholarships to applicants who are "caucasian, male, demonstrate a commitment to education, and substantiate financial need."

The group, based in San Marcos, Texas, claims it condemns racism and will not accept applications or donations from groups of people associated with white supremacy groups. It also claims it has no official stance on affirmative action.

"We have no hidden agenda to promote racial bigotry or segregation. FMAE's existence is dedicated around one simple principle - to provide monetary aid for education to white males who need it."

The group has prompted cheers and jeers from the university community.

Chip Wozniak, writing in the University Star, the Texas State University's student newspaper, says the scholarship "uses discrimination to promote equality."

"It's hard to commend the association for risking their reputation by offering a scholarship to a group that has historically been on the favoured side of favouritism," he wrote."

A $500 scholarship will get you a semster's worth of textbooks. If you are excited about that, great, but it isn't going to matter much in the long run if you cannot afford the rest of it.

If they were supporting 100 students for four years, then this would be news-worthy.

Distinguishing anyone by the color of their skin is the true basic source of racism. Stop seeing color and racism goes away.

We're all just different shades of tan. There's poor tan people, dumb tan people, rich tan people, educated tan people, and some tan people LOVE chicken. Other tan people read the New York Times. Some tan people live in Africa, and some tan people live in Russia.

But giving a kid a scholarship for being color X is just as racist as a scholarship for color Y.
Recognizing that someone is from disadvantaged ethnic group Z is very racist, because you're calling them disadvantaged for having a certain ethnicity, and treating them specially because of it. Give them a scholarship for being poor or having crack-addict parents. Who cares what color?

Lets see, since this arguement is about white men in TX being underserved in college scholarships and admission, the second largest University in TX, Texas A&M (where my wife attended, received a bit of aid, but got through mostly with loans). I wonder what the racial breakdown is for 2009 ...

Award scholarship to individuals with a DISADVANTAGE. Maybe poor, maybe no parents, maybe single parent home, no degree held in immediate family, etc etc.

But nothing should be issued on the basis of ethnicity and skin color. So... racial stats are 110% useless and promote racism.

In ten years the hispanic population will exceed the caucasian population in TX. Current figures are around 38% hispanic, 45% caucasian and they are certainly not represented equally in higher education in my state.

Again, why do those groups exist in the first place?

I can tell you want to be part of the solution, which is great. But I'm saying that continuing to see things in color is counterproductive, and should be discounted as a possible solution.

Merit scholarships. End of conversation. They keep stuffing kids into schools, not qualified, just because of 'social' condition.

If you can't make the grade dig ditches.

Whos fault the kids not prepared? #1 PARENTS or lack there of. #2 Educational system. Pumping money in doesnt help. Successful students come from diligent parents involved in their towns schools.

This shit pisses me off. I get countless emails about these types of scholarships everyday from my school. Too bad I can't apply because I'm not "diverse".

I work my ass off to get good grades and I've applied for dozens of scholarships, and nothing.

My friend (white girl) was approached by the Head of the Fire Protecting engineering here and he told he he'd give her 2,000 a semester to switch from mechanical to fire protection..On the only basis that they only had 3 girls in the program..

Other friends with "diversity" have scholarships as well, yet my HS GPA was better, my SAT's were better and my GPA is still better.

In a lot of cities white's are now the minorities yet you don't see the same protection being giving to whites..

I never really understood the point of scholarships based solely on need. If a student shows merit and need, give them a scholarship, but if the student shows no merit at all, but still shows need they get all the money. I know I try to apply for scholarships and I am eligible for probably 2 out of 100, since they all have either race, gender, or home location requirements.

Why can't I say I have a good GPA, give me money?

That's not how it works. You have to have a bad GPA, so we can pretend the reason your GPA sucks is because your poor. Naturally, the only way you could achieve a beter GPA is to throw money at the problem and keep you in school. If you have a good GPA, you must be one of those privileged rich folk, so stop asking for more help.

I met many fucktards who enjoyed free rides or close to free rides who didn't deserve to even be in a school. Its disgusting.

While scholorships will always discriminate... whos to say a black man cant get a white scholorship and visaversa.
So long as they do not ask for photos they will never know, I had a white friend get a naacp scholorship for submitting an essay on slavery.
They did not find out untill a year later.


Goes the same with how guys have gotten scholorships from wemon rights groups without them knowing.
