Westchester attorney thinks NYC schools are failing students!
March 25, 2011 at 5:52 PM · Filed underConstitutional, Culture, Free Speech Rights, Law,Lisa Law Blog, Mamaroneck lawyer Lisa Fantino,Politics, Society, Westchester Attorney and tagged:free speech, NYC public schools, Pledge of Allegiance controversy

First, there was the big controversy from parents objecting to their children saying the “Pledge of Allegiance” because of the sentence “one nation under God.” Now comes word that at least half of the schools in New York City are omitting the Pledge altogether. Really, Really? Some who object to the Pledge say it places immigrant students in an uncomfortable situation because they are listening to the oath to honor a nation which is not their homeland.

OK, I’m sorry but when does the crazy train stop in this country. A public school education is free in this country, paid for on the backs of working people who work hard and pay taxes to THIS country. Presumably, many of these immigrant students were brought here for a better education and now get a free education in THIS country while their parents don’t work and don’t pay taxes.

I applaud the Brooklyn father, a firefighter hero, who called his daughter’s school to task because she had never heard the morning Pledge and only first learned of it while watching TV. Trust me, this story isn’t over yet since another father called the recitation of the Pledge “social coercion,” according to theNY Daily News. Well, you know what, if he doesn’t like this tradition of respect then let him place his child in a “less traditional” environment, one where he might have to pay for education.

Free education……..free government assistance……….and they’re going to feel uncomfortable to pledge allegiance to the nation giving them a free ride to a better life. It seems like the crazy train gave way to the insane rocket a long time ago! Wake up America!

fun little fact: the pledge was created by a flagmaker.

another little fact: "under god" was only put in the pledge in 1954

Maybe it has a lot to do with separation of church and state, the country's history with forced religious beliefs, the diversification of religious choices in this country, and the rapidly increasing portion of the population who could be considered atheist or agnostic? Maybe you should "wake up" and stop being so closed minded?

I kinda miss the pledge..

We said it all thru elementary school without a problem. middle school it was still there and we had to say it.
which I do not mind at all even without having a religion I dont mind saying under god.

but in high school, I can honestly say... I never said it once, nor did I ever see it on morning announcements.

As much as I hated saying it in school, I didnt mind it, and I understood it was just part of life.
Pledging to a country that is my own is understandable, and its done to a higher respect in other countries.

Technically, this isnt anyones homelands, except the native americans. and I know some of them who even say it despise the fact they dislike the government.

This is just an example - If you were a kid in NYC, going to public school, where
Ethnic Diversity was the norm, The Pledge was Traditional
It brought all these kids together, for a moment, even if they didn't speak the language -
IMHO, the idea of the Pledge, was worthwhile
As far as removing the word G-d, I have no problem with that at all!

I believe in the separation of church and state, I believe they should be taxed,

I especially like the last line.....
With Liberty And Justice For All

Not a bad idea, is it?

Oh I agree with that. I don't give a shit either, I don't see the point in getting offended. But just as it's silly to get offended about being asked to say the pledge, it's silly to get offended that people wish not to.

It's certainly silly to get offended by a religious part of "the pledge", but taking the whole pledge thing seriously is too IMHO. This whole american way of taking nationalism with a religious amount of seriousness is freaky. It's only a country like many others. A better standard of life than many others, worse than some others, ups and downs like everywhere else. It's a sad state when everybody is falling over themselves to display patriotism and love for the country they just happened to be born in, or came to live in for practical reasons. If any politician even dares to imply that there may be other countries that are not any worse he'll get jumped on by the flag waving ones smelling a free dinner. Again not unlike religion. It only reinforces an "us vs them" mentality based on ignorance which does not get you anywhere. You can love your country all you want, good for you, just stop taking everything so bloody seriously.

I would certainly refuse to recite a pledge of allegiance to any country I am in because it is a fucking waste of time I could be doing something slightly more meaningful with like watching paint dry.
