Yes its clearly a hinge lol, spot welded, but where the screw would normally go in if this was a actual door, looks like rivets on the back side

Yeah, I see that now. Any idea why it's there?

to "baffle" the oil towards the area so the pickup tube is busy keeping them bearings wet.

Sadly, I can't remember the url... :glare:
Good luck with the rebuild.

Thats only $116 on their site. Not a bad mod for peace of mind for those that track their cars

I meant the hinge, I understand the reason for the baffles.

They hinge that way so that when you are going into a corner, say going right. All the oil goes from the left side of the pan to the right. The hinges on the right side lift up, and oil flows through them, but the hinges on the left side are forced closed, therefore trapping the oil in the center sqaure, where the pick up tube is. Same goes when the oil moves left to right or front to back.

Just realized though, since I no longer have an 850 engine, they dont make the baffles for the engine I have. Damn.

Looks like anyone that has a oil pan with a built in oil cooler is out of luck.

Would it be dumb to convert a pan with a built in oil cooler to one with an external one like the 850 and put this mod in?

Why not build it in the later pan? Don't see why it wouldn't work. I'll have to pull the baffle from my spare pan & take a look see.

Yeah what Aequitas said. the term "baffle" can mean to either re flow or redirect, even reduce but in this case its increasing lubrification. Would be a great mod to have, and this could of saved JCviggens car in that video....

OK, good to know. Since I'm going to be replacing my oil pan this summer, I'm paying very close attention to this thread!

The question would be if you could. I do plan on tracking my car at some point and for $115 I would buy it in a heart beat.

I am glad this is generating a lot of discussion. Ben will be testing out his baffle design at ORP in the next week or so, so I will let you know how that goes. If it works out, I will probably go with that design.

The engine is out of the car and being preped to be picked up on Saturday. If I am lucky I will have it back at the end of May, but since I have no luck at all it will more likely be sometime in June.

On the positive side, the Miller's are letting me drive their Evo in autocross this weekend, and I have another ride for the afternoon. :)

Did you pull the pan and inspect the bearing? Please do, I'd like to see pics. It may not be that bad.

I did not pull the pan. I am not anywhere near the car right now. Brian drained out some of the oil last week and it had metal flakes it it. That metal will probably be all through the system, which is the reason it is being torn down and cleaned.

This is a pic of the oil sample that was drained during diagnosis - you can see the bits of bearing that settled out in just a few minutes... The engine will be cleaned, the oil cooler (radiator) is slated to be replaced along with oil cooler lines to try to minimize any contamination of the new engine.

Known damage:
#2 rod is done.
Crank has some scoring, but the machine shop will determine if it is done.
#2 piston has some skirt damage and the shop will decide on that also.
Head looks to be ok.

Everything going to the machine shops tomorrow. Hopefully I will know more next week.

Are you routing your PCV back into your intake? Your valves look dirty and gummed up.
