And you don't need to pass an IQ test to hold a political office.

Actually you DO have to pass an IQ test. It's called convincing voters that you're smart enough to succeed at the job they're electing you to do.

Perhaps the issue isn't the people in office, perhaps the failure occurs at the ballot box.

Any attempt however to impose an IQ test on voters is likely to slam up against accusations of poll testing from the Civil Rights era which abolished literacy tests with the Civil Rights Act of 1965.

I strongly disagree, that's a bit singular. There are many political parties that represent and convince people they will succeed in doing what they want to accomplish, it does not mean they are making intelligent, rational, and empirically based decisions.

Perhaps, maybe people should be better educated.

I picked a pretty circuitous route and arguably cheated slightly, but I'm going to get there

Erik hits it right on the screws. Educated electorate makes good decisions and is not swayed by BS. But that doesnt keep zealots and ideologues from influencing voters. Unfortunately that not the case and people vote for who gives em the most shit, poor folks and corporations alike.

Get rid of hand outs and let em stand on there on 2 feet and the merits of the issues. I'm tired of handouts...earn it or GTFO.

That's not going to change. Interesting statement coming from you btw! ;)
People are easy enough to fool because hardly anybody knows how the world or the country in question actually works. They'll go for whatever sounds best to them and they don't like any clever geeks telling them what they should or shouldn't do.
About the hand-outs, only difference between parties is who they hand out to.

PFFFT...
first Republican in this district in 90 yrs. Wiener beat the same guy by 22 points, Turner won this time by 8 points. Your Obama pissed off a a huge segment of his base, non-Orthodox Jews. This wasn't about Wiener.

I don't vote for ideologues and zealots...but that depends on where you set your bar JC. If your European that bar is low. If your me, a zealot is not someone who abides by the Constitution, is God fearing. or thinks the Govt fuks shit up. I still cant fine one Govt program thast not over-budget, totally failing, full of pork and vigs, and filled with waste and fraud from the beneficiaries to the implementers.
My challenge stands, bedsides NASA, name one that is successful.

I'll start, the War on Poverty, Lyndon Johnson's 13 trillion dollar boondoggle that hasn't made a dent. 45 yrs of waste, fraud and govt expansion. Ruined 2 generations of minority Americans. When you get handouts you get lazy.

Now for another 6 month break from this forum. I'm still watching my blood pressure and preparing my massive 4 yr I TOLD YOU SO wrap up.

OOOOH a minus 1! I pissed of a hippy, good.
