Extremely versatile lens, actually. I'm not a huge fan of zoom lenses, fixed focal length lenses typically focus faster and are much sharper. In nearly all cases prime lenses will be sharper, and thus are preferred over zoom lenses. While they are slightly less versatile, they are faster (larger aperture) and sharper.
