This is the third time I've heard this. It sounds kind of like a screeching belt but it's not coming from that area, it sounds like it is coming more from the rear of the engine (driver's side) or near the firewall/turbo area.

Last two times it just went away on it's own after starting it later. This time it started making the noise last night. I started it a few times and a couple times the sound was there but a little quieter so I decided to limp it back home. Other than the noise it seemed to run just fine. I started it this morning and it's still doing it. It gets louder with rpm's.

My car uses oil and the first couple of times I saw that the oil level was pretty low. This time though the oil level is fine. Last time I noticed that after the sound went away the turbo wasn't spooling well, but it didn't seem to be the case last night. I disconnected the hoses to the turbo on both the intake and intercooler sides and started it up and the noise is the same.

What do you think?

You disconnected the air intake and pressure side of the turbo, but you didn't stop the turbo from spinning since the exhaust will still flowing through it.

Dead turbo is your most likely cause given the area you say the sound is in. It doesn't make the noise when you are cranking it over, only once the engine fires up.

Good point, thank you. I'll dive in to it later tonight. Time for an upgrade? :)

Doesn't seem to be the turbo. A tiny bit of lateral shaft play. I kept the compressor wheel from turning and started the car and got the same noise. Any other ideas?

I pulled the fuel and ignition coil fuse to see if I could hear the noise while cranking. Interestingly I didn't hear anything until I stopped cranking. I'm wondering if it is starter related? Take a listen.

remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over by hand (well, with a wrench on the crank pully...) see if you can hear anything.

Do you have an auto or a manual? Done any work to it recently? Maybe a bolt found it's way into the trans and is rubbing on the flywheel?

Hey Glen. It's an auto and no work done recently. I'm probably going to grab a used starter on my way home today. The more I think about the sounds I've been hearing, even before the last couple of days, the more I think it's starter related. I think it's not disengaging completely.

That would be great news Dan. Follow up with your findings with the starter!

that sounds exactly what a starter not disengaging would sound like. yay for deductive reasoning!
