Hope I'm in the right category.
Seen so many different reviews for different years and models my head is spinning.
I like 1998 S 70.....just don't know cuz of mixed reviews......any input would be appreciated !

Thanks

What are you seeing mixed reviews about? The 98 was a great year.

first, welcome to VS. Second, 1998 S70 was a great year. S/v70s were basically refined 850s. Chassis was updated for better ride/comfort. Same great 5 cylinder motor as the 850s. Interior was updated. I own a 1998 v70 T-5, High pressure turbo, and love it! I believe the GLT's were the low pressure turbos and there were still the non turbo models.
Good luck with your search on a clean S70. You actually can't go wrong between 98 to 2K for a S70. Keep asking questions if you need help :)

-Mike

Oh, BTW, if you want cool points among the Volvo enthusiasts, look for a S70 T-5 with a factory manual. You'll get much props for that choice and if you find one in mint condition ;)

I'm still looking daily....do you have a mileage and price range in mind ?
I've been told don't buy a used car with over 120000
I look on craigslist in LA, OC and San Diego
Know of any site online that has volvo classifieds in orange county besides craigslist ?

Thanks so much!

No worries Socalfem and please call me Mike.

AVG mileage would prolly be around 130K (@10K a year * 13yr car) With Volvos, if they have been regularly been maintained, mileage is not an issue. Better if you buy it from someone who has the history behind the car. Besides CL, check this forum and post up in the wanted section what you are looking for, post up here in the NWC section what you are looking for. Also, Swedespeed is good to look at as well. VS and SS are both Volvo forums so we are hard core Volvo peeps. I recently looked at CL, nothing here in Portland or Seattle area, sorry.

Hi Pam - carfax is okay. Generally with a 120K car it's a kind of "uh, no" but Volvos are strong cars. I guess, most Japanese cars are the same as well, but let's stay on topic :D
Carfax and if you find a car, pay to have it inspected by an independent mechanic. Vehicle inspections cost from 70 to 100 bucks, but worth it. Someone isn't willing to have you take it to a mechanic of your choice, then there is something wrong.

Yeah, I know your in SOCAL, but thought, throw it out there as a "BTW, here are some s70s" I guess I'm used to the NWC who are down to travel for a car. Just wanted to give you a heads up on what's local here.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks again Mike
Would I still pay to have it inspected if I bought it from a dealer ?
Also what is a "uh no" mileage for a used Volvo to start with ?

Hey Pam,

First off welcome to VS

With most of our cars approaching 10+ years old, having a car with 120k miles and more is pretty common, finding one with less tha 100k is gonna cost you a pretty penny. That being said, if a s70 has been taken care of with just basic maintenance, you shouldn't be scared just based on miles.

Now, personally, I think carfax reports are a joke, I would always get one just in case, but never buy a car just cause it has a good carfax. I couldnt agree more with mike, I would never buy a car without doing a buyers inspection at your local Volvo repair shop, they are worth their weight in gold even if you are looking at multiple cars.

Are you new to Volvos all together or just to the 70 series cars?

It kind of depends on if it's AWD or not. I'd start getting second opinion on the car it it had more than 150-160k on it though.

Honestly you shouldn't have a problem finding a low milage s70, it might take ome time but you'll find one

Thanks captain
I am new to Volvos, I love how they look and know they are safe, just don't have the budget for a newer one.
Hence, the used Volvo, just don't know which is the most reliable year, class, etc.
That's why I have come to the experts ; )

Hahahaha did you just call me captain?? Hahahaha

I actually was searching around craigslist the other day down in the LA area (I'm moving down shortly) and found a couple that I remember seeing

http://losangeles.cr...2568088536.html

Paying around $4000 for a car with less than 100k miles on it is normal if the cars nice, especially if the car has had recent tune up work done to it for you.

As mike said don't hesitate to ask any questions

Captain hahahaha awesome

The second cars an s40, really durable but sit in one before you decide you like it, they have a very cheap feel to them inside the car

I, and I know a couple other member steer clear from used car lots, pain in the arse to deal with, and they never want to let you do buyers inspections, just a thought

Welcome to VS pam, I just recently picked up a 98 s70 T5, it had 165k on the odometer and so far the only issue was the alternator going out (expensive if you dont do your own work and a real PITA if you do) which seems fairly common around that mileage. Mines already up to 177k and running great, the previous 2 owners had the maintenance records in the car and it was well taken care of.

Its a great car and they are very affordable considering what you'd pay for a comparable bmw or mercedes of the same time period. shop around a bit and you will probably find a good deal.

What part of orange county? I grew up in Yorba Linda.
