If anyone has looked in the Volvo dash before, you probably have seen some of the wires are wrapped in this self-adhesive foam. Unfortunately, most of that foam starts to disintegrate over the years.

Anyone know a good replacement solution?

I have felt wire harness tape, which works fine for wires that won't touch anything, but I want to use something else.

//edit: found something like this: http://www.ebay.com/...#ht_1079wt_1323

I've seen this stuff at hobby stores before. Might work, but figure there is a cheaper alternative.

I have the same question. Undoubtedly it is used to keep cabin noise down. I am wondering how much difference it could make. I saw a fabric like sleeve on some VW dash harness wiring and wondered if I could find some of that.

What I REALLY need to know now is an effective way to clean this adhesive sticky rotted foam mess off my existing wiring.

Cotton batting/foam is an excellent sound barrier. I called some car audio places and they didn't even know what I was talking about.

I've done some more research and found it referred to as "acoustic cotton." It's basically the same as the recycled jean fabric used in lieu of fiberglass wall insulation. Problem is, most of it is very thick and made for walls, not for cars or wiring harnesses.

Alternatively, there is "recycled felt padding" which is almost like the stuff that goes under carpets.

I just used electrical tape. I literally taped the whole thing. No difference in noise for me and no more stickiness.

i just ordered some OverKill from Second Skin Audio:

2x OverKill Pro for the doors and 1x the regular (thin) for various other uses... Not the cheapest solution (@$15 for 9sqft), but I imagine it would work well for wrapping around plugs and such.

I've been wrapping all my new (and re)wires in cotton friction tape though... I believe this is what I have (ordered a bunch a long time ago): http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/B000X18Z62
