Help With Na Cams And Timing

So basically right now the Cams are locked with a Dealer Cam tool that I got from a Volvo friend.

My mechanic said the crankshaft is set right now a little too the left of the mark on the oil pump, but he said he cant move all the way too that mark or the piston will hit the valves. What he is he supposed to do from here?

why will it hit valves? is your timing belt still on?

What car? 850 the tab on the oil pump is about 11 o'clock, and that is where you align the crank. On S60 and later, the tab on the oil pump is 12 o'clock, and that is where you align it. I found this out the hard way, using 850 diagram on an S60, ended up one tooth off.

If you have the Volvo tool set for doing cams, there is a strange looking piece in the kit you need to use, here it is in a posting on eBay:

This goes in a hole that is accessed behind the starter (remove starter) and, from VIDA:


"Position the crankshaft
Remove the starter motor mounting screws. Pull out the starter motor and place it to one side.
Remove the blind cover plug
Turn the crankshaft slightly clockwise.
Install crankshaft stop. Ensure that it bottoms out against the cylinder block.
Turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise until it stops against the crankshaft stop
Check that the marking on the crankshaft timing gear pulley corresponds with the marking on the oil pump."

STop goes in with the projection on the top of the tool when stuck in the hole in the block. Don't lose the seal on the plug.
Now you have the crank and cam indexed properly.

If he is that close, it shouldn't hit the pistons. Of course, you do this with the timing belt OFF.

Its a 98 S70T5 and the Belt is off. I have never heard of this tool? So the Cranks and the crank have to be indexed properly, but only these guys on that ebay site have the tool. Im confused?

Well my mechanic and a Volvo tech had a talk and figured out everything so far was done right. The problem might be that both the NA cams that were put in are the same cam???? Is there two different part numbers for 93 NA cams??

I just talked too Volvo and they never use that tool? Right now the cams are coming back out too see if they were reversed? Thats why im looking for part numbers for reference. FRom what both techs think is that the cams are the same cams, not an intake and exhaust, or the cam were installed backwards? I have NO idea and just hope that i acan get some info and get this thing started.

There are markings on the back end (dist/cam sensor side) of the cams that indicate I and E. You don't need to pull the cams to see the markings.

even if there rn't markings i'm almost 100% sure that the cams look very different on the transmission side, you have the intake cam that holds the distributer and the exhaust cam has the piece for the cam sensor, i'm pretty sure u can tell the difference

I just called my guy too see if he can find any markings that indicate I and E on the Cams.I cant see then on the pic above though? What a PITA his is.

You can't see the markings? The one on the right is hard to see but the one on the left isn't bad. Adjust your monitor? The left one says 9146232.PLI. I indicating Intake. The other one ends in E indicating Exhaust.

If the pistons are hitting the valves when he rotates to the mark, he must have the cams reversed. The cams are clearly marked as BlackT5 indicated: part # followed by an "I" or "E"

Off topic here.... but right now Im running the AC Delco TCV connected to the Turbo and WG. The other port is just venting. Any issues with that should be good right?

Should be fine - my APexi solenoid is configured this way, and I have no problems (unmetered air, etc..)
