Hey guys, I noticed in one of the locked s70 speaker threads there was talk about how the only replacement speakers that can be used on the rear deck are those kicker 8"midbass ones.

I haven't had a good looksy as to what I'd be working with on the rear deck but I did notice the factory speakers back there are 8ohm, or something.

So, I'm wondering if these badboys would work as a direct replacement? I would be amplifying them possibly, or maybe not in which case baby jesus would cry.

http://www.parts-exp...number=264-1102

note that these speakers are not sold in pairs and they generally like a nice sealed box.

Your thoughts? Who has replaced the rear volvo speakers with something drop in/direct fit?

Thanks

I have been looking at the same from parts express. However a mid range speaker for the rear shelf should it consist of a wider frequency range?

This one looks good. http://www.parts-exp...tnumber=290-314 I have personal experience with it and has a wide range.
there's this too http://www.parts-exp...tnumber=295-332 which is cheaper.

Really it's all about personal preference and what one is looking for. I myself would rather stick one of these in rather than some automotive manufactures.

The Peerless SLS sound pretty damn awesome imo. Not a direct drop-in, but it'll work with some creativity:

You'll have to snip off the bottom portion of the stock speaker bracket, drill new mounting holes to hold it down, and cut a notch in the rear deck sheet metal for the electrical connection terminals.

Pay attention to the Qts value. For a semi-infinite baffle like the rear deck, a higher value will work better for this application. The rears also don't need to go very high.. there are 6 other speakers in the stock setup to take care of that

Now with the Peerless installed would it be safe to say you can omit a sub enclosure in the trunk?

Going by my standards for sound quality, I would say that's a safe bet. This won't cut it for block rockin beats, but if you want a nice step up from the bass response of the stock system, it works great.

Note that I'm still driving it with the stock SC-815, no R amp under the seat or anything. I can tell it wants more power, but I'm happy to leave it alone, as the sensitivity is good enough for me to get what I want out of it.

Yeah, that's basically my idea, I don't care for a sub in the trunk and I figure there's enough 6" speaks and tweets elsewhere. I'm sure if I end up with a good pair I can make them work modifying what's there.

I'm not an audio install whiz so I wanted some other input. I have the basic volvo in dash cd/tape/am/fm stereo - Not sure if there's an amp as the previous owner swapped the original volvo tape player with it.

I have since removed my stock set up a long time ago. The stock radio didn't have enough power to keep the distortion down for high fidelity. I chose to remove it and go with an after market radio with an EQ. I have amplified all 8 speakers with a 50W x 4 channel amp. Basically dash and doors are wired in parallel. With the same for Rear doors and rear shelf. With a 2 10" sub box in the rear running 100w x 2.

My original plan was to upgrade the speakers in the car and remove the sub box. But after 12 years that never happened.
As I find the sub box is impeding space I'm looking to change the rear shelf speakers in place of the sub box but am worried about not having the same tight sound. I find it funny that there are no posts on a good review that has been already done.

I'll have to look into this more.

Yeah I don't think it would be better than a good sub in a sealed enclosure, that's for sure.

I found this somewhat helpful, he installs in a box and then also tests inside the doors

Wow that site has a lot of Info  .

Most likely I'm going to go for the Goldwood 8028 due to the high qts
http://www.parts-exp...tnumber=290-355

Then figure out something with a low profile sub and cut the rear shelf and sink one in. I really need to get rid of my sub box in the trunk. If that doesn't sound good I'll deal with an enclosure later.

Any 8" sub is pretty low profile and would be easy to install on the rear shelf with a small box underneath. That's what I'd do if it were my car and I didn't want a full-blown sub in the trunk

currently im running an alpine hu and looking into replacement for all stock speakers as none of them keep up.

id rather not lose trunk space and really like everything looking and fitting factory.

Or if doing that why not just install free air subs. That way you're running subs that are designed to work without enclosures. Crutchfield stocks several 8" free air subs: http://www.crutchfie...&nvpair=FFSize|[rank6]8%22

Even got the basic kicker 4 or 8 ohm versions on sale for $50/each. Get a pair of those and a decent 2 channel amp and I'd imagine you'd be able to add a lot of depth to the sound system for very minimal $$ and if you mounted the amp in the pocket on top of the rear dash you'd be sacrificing zero trunk space.

Agreed, you can run a free air setup for less money, but I'd rather take the additional time to install a couple small boxes and have a superior-sounding setup.

ended up modifying the factory mount and running 2 free air 8" kicker subs that are super slim. The amp is mounted in the trunk, under the shelf.

you'd have to butcher the hell out of the shelf in order to do anything there. Believe me, I thought about it.

edit: if you want a few pictures of the setup just let me know and I'll take some.
