2002 s60 2.4t 104k miles.

at idle, esp on cold starts, I get an odd noise coming from the front of the engine.

It sounds like its coming from the alternator area. Sounds like something scraping around. At first, I thought it was the power steering, but it is not a screeching noise. More of a dull growling.

The sound picks up right above idle, but about 1200 rpm the noise goes away.

The sound is very prevalent on cold mornings. I changed the serp belt, and now I notice the sound. I did not change the tensioner.

Any ideas?

Hmmm, that is definitely not a good sound. Tough to tell were it is coming from but I do agree that it does not sound like the PS pump.

Almost sounds like the start of a bearing going bad..

If you take the belt off does it still make the noise?

If not id start checking for play and rough spots in you pulleys.
If its still there Get a set of the stethoscope's and start hunting it down..

The sound started after changing the serp belt. Im wondering if it is related.. I'll pull the belt off in the morning and find out. The thing that gets me is that as the engine heats up, the noise starts to drown out and gets quieter.

It may be the same thing the Vovlo dealer diagnosed on my s60- a failing bearing in the alternator. Ordered a replacement and doing it myself rather than the $900 the dealer wanted ($590 for the alternator and $300 for installation)

I'm on board with that. I'm waiting for it to fail.
