Not sure... couple of seconds or so. I have no other explanation on how this could have happened. Ideas are welcome.

Remember that typically there is not much of a difference of speed between either side of the two main driven gears, only to make up difference when you are turning which is nowhere near 80mph and almost 100% of the torque.
Well, it won't be 100% torque... although the fine details on that point is kinda vague. If one side is spinning, the diff won't start biasing torque to one side until the difference reaches 2.1:1 or so.. surely with one spinning tire and one mostly stationary, you met that criteria. The thing that isn't clear is how much the quaife is capable of biasing torque to one side, or how much energy it consumes in the process of doing its thing. That will change how long the diff can withstand sitting there and roasting one tire. I've done pretty much what you speak of with the stock diff a few times on the snow. Different loading conditions, but it seems to me that just the speed difference alone isn't what did it in.

If it was just a few seconds, that shouldn't be nearly enough heat to do what you posted pics of, unless further damage happened after it started acting up.

I think it was the extreme difference in wheel speed because when I rolled out of the water box and hit the vht I felt the driver's side wheel stop and the pass. side keep spinning. Then the car sort of bogged, probably when the diff locked itself.
