So I went and picked up a 98 t5 with what was thought to be a head gasket, and when I got to see it, the coolent was empty. So I put water in and started it and it ran like a dream, no issues that I really saw. They kid said it over heated and got hot, checked the oil saw white in it and parked it. The out come is that I bought it and drove it and it drove like a dream. I could stomp the gas and it would take right off, but out the back I could see a spray out the rear (later found out that was an oil mist) I was about 15mins home and the temp gage was sitting as it should have been. I parked, turned off the car and checked the coolent tank and it just smoked... all smoke so I let it all come out, and then I filled it back up with water, and then went to start it and plums of white smoke came out the rear, and once started it was not happy.... It was no longer running like nothing was wrong. I got it to start and limp to the house once the smoke stopped coming out the rear it ran a little better, but still missing and not being powerful as it once was. Once I got home I opened the cap back up and same thing fog came out.

I tried to start it again and it wouldn't start just turned over and over, but I did notice as I had the cap off it would puff out smoke out the coolent tank. So I put the lid on it and it started, but just as before NOT happy.

So at the very least I'm sure I need to do the head gasket for sure! Also what would smoke on the back passenger side of the engine near the front of it. I'm aware of where the turbo is, and it was doing it from there, but not as bad as the passenger side. I will look more tomorrow, but I'd like to get a heads up.

Thanks

So sounds like I just made the small issue, a larger one... and will have to get the head milled and such anyhow for sure now! SO any advice on what to do with it all when I'm in there I know timimng belt, water pump and a head gasket for sure, but what else should I repair/upgrade when I'm in there?

Bring the head to a reputable shop and let them do all the nice work(valve, seals etc), clean the top cylinder and get the T-belt kit. Take your time!!!

There is quite a bit that is easier to get at with the head off. I would re-do the vacuum hoses related to the turbo and the TCV. Clean your PTC nipple and possibly do the PCV. Replace cam seals with blue box cam seals. Tensioner roller, idler roller, water pump, timing belt, serp belt.

Definitely replace the valve stem seals.

You're gonna be very lucky if you didn't kill the bottom end toasting it like that. Adding water to severely overheated engine usually = internal damage

^^^^ agreed... and I really wont know if I did damage the lower end till I replace the head and try again. Once the heat ran out I should have stopped and added water then, but I didn't as the car was still reading that the temp was normal. When I put in the cold water is when the issues grew I think!! Like warpping the head and such. So hopefully with a bit of luck I'll be fine, and I'll check out the link with the "nuff said" by it.

Day one of tear down so far taking a little break.

I have removed the air box and turbo piping and disconnected wires and other hoses, and I have removed the intake. Seems so far so good and nothing really to report other than there is the mud in the turbo tubes :( So I would assume this crap is inside the intercooler, so I guess I need to remove that as well and figure out how to clean it out. I also can see that the head and the block has had some seeping issues for some time. I was looking at IPD for parts and such, and some things seem like a good idea like the plastic intake spacer, and then also the "R" exhaust manifold though I have found them on e-bay for a 100 or so bucks. These decent upgrades that are worth the time and extra? Also it does have aftermarket turbo pipes (just the rubbers) as far as I can tell that has really been the most love this car has seen. It did have a new timing belt back in oct/2010. As soon as I load and figure out photos I'll post them soon.
