Aw55-50sn To Aw50-42le Conversion?

One of them an April '99 build requires an engine rebuild and is mated to a good AW50-42LE four speed & the other is a Dec '99 build with a good engine but it has a AW55-50SN five speed which is jerky and has a flashing arrow. It engages all five ratios but seems to be misbehaving; it slips then engages gear when idling then taking off & shifts are jerky. Not certain what this means.
Fluid has not yet been replaced.
Given that a fluid change doesn't fix the transmission can I use the earlier built car to donate it's four speed? I can access looms, computers etc from the donor car. Will this work in the ;ater car?

I have been spannering my 850s and 960 for afew years now, just recently bought and sold a 2003 XC70 and I had no trouble finding the dipstick on any of these cars. Are you certain the very early 5 speeds had one? This certainly makes a flush interesting work without one!! Perhaps I can download a user manual for the car somewhere??

The transmission has that annoying habit of going into and out of a neutral when coming to a stop; very jerky. The test drive I just had proved a hesitation when going into third gear, but no transmission light flashing after clearing the codes.
It stranglely reported a P810 clutch position (it's an auto) though I think the misfiring coilpack may have caused that.
She may be OK for the time being, just have to hunt down the rich running problem. Can a software upgrade fix that annoying false neutral?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

The throttle feels OK (no hunting and linear) except for the 2nd to 3rd shift and the falso neutral stuff. Idle speed is also constant. From what I've read about ETM failure it doesn't seem to have the symptoms but I know early symptoms can be misleading.

Doubt this issue is ETM related though...

Took the car for another half hour drive and lo and behold there is no engine code. It is very smooth, has plenty of power for an NA car and shifts willingly on demand. The P0172 seems to have disappeared. Can a very clogged air cleaner cause the P0172 code?
The transmission seems to be behaving better, though the false neutral is still there. Also the 2nd to 3rd shift has a hesitation but by no means is it bothering me.
Would cleaning the ETM throttle body help this hesitation even though it's restricted to one shift gate?

Might be something to look in to.

If you are still running rich, look for a loose vacuum fitting before you replace the front O2 sensor.

Swapped out the B4 servo cover (a $22 item) , put in synthetic trans fluid with drain & fill method and yanked battery cable to try and let it relearn new shift patterns.
It's now pretty drivable but still has a poor 2nd to 3rd shift and very occasional slam into third but there's no way I'll be spending the dealer recommended $4,500

Good news is the 2nd to 3rd gear flare is GONE!! I couldn't believe it when it began shifting smoothly and the thump it sometimes does is so small it's almost unnoticable. My only guess is that the trans needs this type of driving to adapt or just put it through the adapt cycle with Vida/Dice which is something I was putting off. More than a week after the trip it continues to behave. Should have done the adapt at the dealer earlier as I have put nearly 3,000 miles on her with the flare.
