I dont really post much on this forum but I thought someone might want to see some of the things I have been doing and I am sure I a will have some questions as I go as I know there is some people who are way more into these cars then I am. Its a 99 V70R. I did the 6 speed swap and the motor has rods and pistons. I used to have a GT3076 but was tired of the poor spool so since I havent been driving the car much I decided to do a compound turbo setup for fun. Here are some pics so far. This is the start of the twin turbo setup.

Here is a picture of the intake I have been making today.

Dont know if the intake will really make more power but hoping I guess so please dont flame it. Just figured I could make the plenum bigger.

Interesting. Good to see another AWD build!

I'd start this in Showroom - maybe they will move it for you.

That intake looks problematic - the runners are so short you won't be making much power until pretty high up the rpm scale. I went with 6", being close to the ME7 turbo length. Plenum only needs to be about same as engine displacement, 1.5 I think, for turbocharged if I remember correctly. What is your thinking on such short runners & oversize plenum?

Exhaust is facinating - curious to see what the plumbing looks like with the turbos in place & IC plumbing.

Looking forward to more pics.

Looking forward to reading more.

Don't be an ass, he obviously means the engine is built with forged rods and pistons.

Yeah I think you are right about the plenum displacment of 1.5 being a good number. I was always told though bigger is better only for plenum volume. I just look at motorcycle plenums and they are still bigger then my plenum so I figured it wouldnt hurt. I also do have pipes inside of the plenum. They are just peices of aluminum pipe that I crushed in my press and then cut them into sections and welded in the inside. Then just grinded around them until there was no mark. I wish I would have taken more pics of the inside as it looks pretty. Though I guess we will see if it helps.

The pipes should really only slightly protrude off the inside wall - 'trumpets' if you will to make sure they are not in the dead space along the wall itself.

this is what my homemade ones looked like - Posted Image

and more professional version
Posted Image

How much do they protrude?

I can tell you a short runner/large plenum intake vastly improves upper end breathing - I can run to 8400rpm without running out of steam, unlike the choked up feeling of the stock intake.

Mine are probably an inch. defenitaly further then yours though. Yours looks good. Well I figured anything would help the stock manifold so I am at least going in the right direction. You have a picture of yours finished?

We turbocharged an M3 this year so I stole the stock manifolds since the port spacing was identical and the port size matched. The poor mans manifold I guess. I may redo it if it works good though and if I have more time. Time is alway a problem with me.

Yes I plan on trying to make more HP and less TQ to keep the driveline happy.

The car has sat for almost a year with me not doing anything to it. I finally finished some other project and my shop is caught up so hopefully I get this finished before winter is over.

With that header, aren't you going to limit the exhaust flow once the GT35R start pushing hard? Definitely going to be interesting!

Yes the 35R has its own wastegate.

I like the AUDI A8 Maf housing. I was looking exactly for something like that, Lookforjoe

Nice welds too! Did you do those?

I'd rethink that exhaust setup if I were you. That GT35 is never going to spool the way you have it set up, unless you plan on revving it out to 10k or something. When the wastegate starts to open at 15 psi only a small amount of exhaust is going to the big turbo- only exhaust from 3 cylinders that finds its way around that 90 bend and into and out of the wastegate at that.

The other problem is that having the cylinders going to different turbos means some cylinders will have higher backpressure (the ones going to the 15g or whatever), and the others will be breathing somewhat easier out the GT35. This effects the volumetric efficiency balance between cylinders, which means different ones will need different amounts of fuel and will have different optimal spark timing. When you go to tune the engine, whichever cylinder has the worst efficiency or highest backpressure/reversion will probably get the hottest piston crown temps and start knocking first, so you will have to tune for that one, leaving a bunch of power untapped in the other cylinders.

I know it sounds fun to do a "twin turbo" setup, but I would really advise against it. The problem with the GT3076 is that the turbine is much smaller than the compressor wheel, driving down the turbine efficiency and making it take longer to spool. If you get a properly matched Garrett or other turbo (the new GTX3071R should do the trick, or any EFR turbo), you will be much happier and your engine will appreciate it.

i was just about to ask about this :) i've heard different sized turbos get you both low and high rpm power so i'm sure benefit you. what made you not want to go with ITB's? maybe i missed your post about that but i know you can get 'em from bikes like hyabusa. just have to cut one off to make it fit!

anywho, this is a neat build. are you going to powdercoat anything while you're building or just leave it how it is?
