Now... what would it take to put a manual switch on the mast?

If your Pioneer made the antenna in the 850
go up and down, it should just plug and play.
Did it? Or was is left disconnected because
the 850's antenna was broken?
Did the S70 antenna work OK with the stock HU?
Is the power antenna output fom the Pioneer
connected to the adapter harness lead?

If you really want a switch, an OEM
antenna switch would be perfect.
But now I gotta know...Which Pioneer?

I've got a spare foglight switch which should work... but I'm probably just going to stick a little radioshack toggle somewhere hidden.

Why not just hook it up? Then you can run it through a switch
if you want and have an auto antenna with a manual override.

There was a wire in my pioneer's harness labeled specifically 'Antennae' but it didn't do jack. There isn't one labeled for amp trigger, and I don't have any other amps at the moment.

Power it up in CD mode or some other input, you'll get nada on purpose.
There's also a chance that since your Pioneer was originally installed in a
car with a hosed antenna, you may have smoked the HU's antenna output.
Not remarkably likely, but certainly possible.

it's just a 12v output. check and see if you have any output with a DMM when you are in radio mode. otherwise, you can use the same wire for the amplifier to signal the antenna to turn on. Or, you can run a 12v acc switched wire to a switch and then to the antenna signal lead. when you decide you need the antenna, just flip the switch. it isn't momentary, either.
