when I was changing a right rear flat The jack lifted both front and rear wheels on the right side. My bad for not having wheel blocks with me. The wagon gently sat down on the disk, bending the splash plate. When I put the rim and new tire back on, the rear shakes at 65mph. I had the wheel rebalanced, (not on the car) but the shake is still there. I can't feel a shimmy when braking, BTW. Did I mess something up?

The brake disk probably bent when the car sat on it.

There is a PSA announcement here.......

Check the rotor and hub to see if they are bent.

Take rotor to get cut, when they chuck it up you will be able to see if it wobbles.

Thanks. Can I see it wobble if I remove the wheel and rotate the disk by hand? If it is likely that hub / rotor is bent, I'd just as soon go ahead and R&R, rather than trek all over town trying to get it checked. I have an Advance Auto / O'Rielly's close by

Is it advisable to replace only one side of the rear rotors? I assume I'll have to do pads with the R&R, so I might as well do both sides.

Che' what PSA are you referring to?

LOL! After that roll off, then the hassle of getting the jack back under the car, all done roadside in the dark, I bought a pair of those, plus a can of fix a flat... :-) Lesson learned.....

You are very fortunate you weren't injured or worse during this mishap. Here's my PSA: Years ago I lost a friend in a similar manner. He had the car jacked up in a similar manner to yours. He crawled underneath to check something without chocking the wheels, or putting jackstands in place. His girlfriend found him crushed to death an hour later...with just his legs sticking out from under the car.

Sorry for the grim story, but it's an important one. I think of it every time I roll the jack under the car.

were you using the pos volvo jack I always wonder why they never had a lawsuit on those. I had the same thing happen three years ago. I also had the same wobble it was due to the wheel locator pin on rotor loosen up after dropping, re tighten and all was well.

thanks for the tip on the locator pin. I'm going to make a visual inspection shortly. And I'm thinking of a better jack, too. Why volvo placed the jack point where it would lift the whole side of the car, not just one corner, is beyond me..

I never use the factory jack if I can help it, and one of the rare times I did, the fucking jack point broke on my car and it fell...just as i finished putting a wheel on. Jack got wedged under car, bent etc...Shit design.
You can get wheel chocks for free (or a buck or 2 if they actually charge you) at any pull-a-part from a Chevy truck. They come with a pair behind the seat. (part of the jack etc...) I have a couple sets.

pretty sure they went to just the one in the middle when the 850 came out, if I remember correctly my 960 had 2 of those jack points, one right in front of the rear wheel and one closer to the front wheels .. but yeah it probably says in the manual dont get under the car with just that little jack in place .. should be common sense tho really .. but now these cars are starting to get driven by a generation raised by mtv reality shows

Chocked both opposite wheels, put it up on one jack plus a jack stand, said a Hail Mary, and pulled the wheel off. The pin is tight on. I rotated the disk / hub and it had a small bit of drag, except of maybe 30 degrees of rotation, where it had less to no drag. I put the wheel back on and tried it again, and had the same results, so I am assuming the disk is bent. Now thinking about handing the job over to my mechanic - looks like a PITA job...

OP: Its a bent rotor for sure then. 1 hour and 200 bones max. Job is super easy and instructions are on the site.

They did recall them. Well not sure if it was a recall or replacement, but I did get a letter telling me to come get a new jack at one point. That said I use the OEM jack more than anything else. If I cannot get to my lift for whatever reason I will use the OEM jack to rotate the tires. Keep in mind I am never under the car, nor would I ever ben on any back. For everything else its lift or ramps.

Thanks. It looked like a pain to get the caliper bolts loose, but a one hour job is doable for me. I assume I should replace pads on both sides? Now to go find the how to....

Under 50 dollars shipped.

As for pads just inspect them. If they need replaced or are close than sure, but rear pads last a LONG time.

Thanks Che' for the how to link. I was looking at FCB's disks about the time you posted. - they have three brands- are they about all the same? I can get them at Advance auto, too. FCPtalks about the need for a 7mm hex, but I didn't see a hex bolt while I was looking at my car- mien looks just like the how to. Do I need to R&R both rear disks?

I have always found the parking brake sufficient to hold the car when using the OEM jack... maybe I'm just lucky.
