I picked a pretty circuitous route and arguably cheated slightly, but I'm going to get there

Don't see it as either or, smart businesses use them both, where they should be used, and do it wisely.
Nothing to do with smart. If you are a fortune 100 with stagg for social marketing than yes. You probably have twitter, myspace, facebook, and google+ all running through something like hootsuite, twitdeck whatever. If you are a smaller brick and mortar, you will not see return on that much effort and will target whatever has the best ROI.
