This week I successfully swapped my car to an M66 AWD 6 speed transmission... and it was awesome!! However, I have succeeded in breaking my motor - B5234T6

Useful link relevant to this discussion: http://en.wikipedia...._Modular_engine

I do not know the extent of the damage yet, and I will post a video of the noise when I pull the head off this weekend. It still runs and drives, but it's bad bad rattle. Sounds like bent valves to me, but I don't know. Caused by overboost in 4th and it started shuttering when it failed.

So my question is this for those of you who have experience in this area. How much does it cost and what are the necessary parts to rebuild the motor properly? Connecting rods? Pistons? Etc

OR to look for a later 2.3 or 2.5 motor and which reportedly have the forged internals from the factory?

PS... anyone have a motors for sale?

How long is a piece of strong question. I have done 850 motors that were 1200, and I have done motors that were 12000. What are your goals?

My goals are hopefully somewhere in the 300 to 400 hp areas ***someday. However, I do not want to just throw another motor in for the uber cheap and just blow it up again, like I'm sure I would with a 2.4LPT, for example.

This is early speculation, as I haven't torn my motor apart yet (happening this weekend, I believe) and I'm wondering if a motor from a later car would be happier with my transmission from an 05.

Found some 2.3L and 2.5L motors... complete for around a grand. I assume that would be cheaper than building mine with forged internals, but would they stand up to the power goals listed?

Thanks for your response.

Just was snooping around the forsale

You probably saw it already but that is a decent deal for rods and piston heads if you're gonna go that route.

If you do decide to go with a newer motor, and don't want to add forged internals, the 02+ engines got revised rods and pistons that make the standard HPT engine stronger than an earlier (pre-02) HPT engine.

Plus, they got a better flowing head and improved oil pan when compared to your 98 engine. There are numerous threads documenting the changes/improvements in the RN motors.

Yes... was looking for more of a whole motor build goal.

See above... like this. That's what I was wondering. Thank you for that Che

And finally... from what I'm reading, I think this is the route I'm seriously considering. Bang for buck, newer motor keeps crossing my mind.

Thanks for your input.

Newer motor is not best bang for the buck. Best bet would be mild head work, new rods, bigger turbo.

Lucas, back when I did my motor rebuild, it was roughly $3k, not counting some of the performo parts. The LGSpeed rods cost me $500 from a member here, balancing the rotating assembly and 3 angle valve job was like $300. Figure in new bearings, blah blah blah............

If you're going whole motor - I'd get the 2.3l rather than the 2.5l.

Or, just get a newer head & build your bottom end (unless the bores are fucked from whatever let loose)

H-beam rods are great insurance.
