About a week ago... the M66 swap in my V70R was complete:

http://gallery.me.co...=13239284620001

Shortly thereafter... my motor + overboost = bent rods (if not more internal items)

So... I decided to start looking for another motor and in another state, found this B5254T2 from an 07 S60 FWD auto... mileage believed to be about 26K

A board had smacked the top of the engine in an accident and broke two of the COPs, but otherwise, everything seeming was in good order.

So after turning it over by hand and checking the timing marks, an offer was made and accepted. Then came the matter of getting it into the transport vehicle... a Honda Element.

Loaded up for the trip back to ohio

Removed auto trans, TC, and flex plate
Posted Image

Removed alternator, AC compressor, accessories bracket, all wiring, PCV, turbo hotsite + shield, intake, fuel rail, thermostat housing, front cam sensor, all cut hoses, etc. Ended up with a pile

Posted Image

2.5L next to 2.3L... before cleaning starts

Posted Image

Front cam drilled out to 11/16ths to accept distributor rotor. Cap bolts up perfectly

Posted Image

And this is basically how it sits now after some cleaning with more cleaning to come. Yes... it's gross... I'm aware... trust me. I'm working on it. But it's just surface stuff. Flakes right off... just tedious as hell

Thanks to Dan for letting me use his garage................. and for modifying this bucket for me. I'll post updates here if anyone's interested. Hope to have it running by this weekend.

The m66 has 33K... and 2.5L has 26K. Should feel pretty fresh when it's all done and operational. The next mods will be turbo, FMIC, and a proper tune or turbotuner.

nice, when you do this on a 98, what happens to the vvt? also what exactly did you do with the front cam? drill what part out?

this is very interesting what you are doing.

Haven't you seen any of the other threads with people using RN blocks in 850s/x70s? All that is in those.

The very center of the cam has to be drilled out to accept the platform that the rotor rides on. Not very deep either, or you would get into the threads.

As for now, the vvt will be left unplugged. Dan and I are discussing different things that could be done with it, but a standalone controller would just confuse the ecu, I believe.

Yes, but he is using the later style dual VVT head, and there is normally a sensor mounted on the back of the intake cam where he is putting the distributor. So now he has not sensor on the cam, and is going to potentially have a problem. Other posters have said just block the VVT valve so it styas in one location. I'm not so certain that works well.

You have to drill the other side out as well for the cam sensor. At least I had to.

VVT can be left unplugged. I have a VVT controller. It doesn't confuse the ECU but I need to add an RPM pickup to my controller to fine tune it better.

Just blocking it will not work from what I know. It will just go back and forth instead of staying in one place. If you block it you should have a Non VVT hub like hussein had.

Go to advanced auto and pick up some eagle 1 mag wheel cleaner. Spray it, let it sit for a few minutes, start brushing and then hose it off. I did that to both of my m56s and they look brand new with no oxidation.

Good to know. That's what I was about to do next... but was trying to figure out how to clean this thing. It's very very gross. lol Will take some before and after shots if I end up drilling out the rear cam, which I should have done for the front.

Nice!

Don't throw the ME7 intake away - you can cut off the flange & use it for a custom intake.....

The early ancillary bracket will bolt up - just make sure you reverse the long alt pivot bolt so it feeds from the outside in, otherwise you'll never be able to service the alt w/o removing the intake & breather box. This does mean shaving/grinding down the large flange that currently the bolt threads into & then just using a nut on the backside like the other two alt mount points.
You want to retain that newer style larger breather, btw.

I was under the impression the PCV breather box would be too large to go under the 2.3L intake manifold. I will have to do some test fitting, but if that is the case, that's good news. I like the revised aluminum line that runs back towards the intake. On the other end of that... should I keep the section where it reconnects back to the block on the back side?

Thanks for the advise on the alternator pivot bolt as well... that's great advise.

As for the ME7 intake... that's exactly what I was thinking today. For now I'm going to try and have the 2.3L intake port matched and get it on the road.

You need the IPD spacer to fit the bigger PCV box. I tried and failed.

I have pics of the mod to the newr style box to fit under the early intake- the IPD. Spacer is also needed. Breathing is much better with the newr box, so it's worth the effort.

EDIT:

Drill a 3/8 NPT tap size hole on the seam as shown & screw in a 3/8 pipe fitting. The stock Volvo breather hose will be a snug fit over it. A plain cap is fine for the existing port. Remember that with the newer box, the cam breather port is rotated around to the driver's side of the box, compared to the old style where was on the pass side.

Too far away. :( Besides, I have a spare engine as it is sitting at my Dad's work. I think I'm going to tear it down and slowly start rebuilding it with rods.

How about that reply to the PM. ;)

If you're using the old t/stat housing, you'll need to add a port for that hose. The other end goes into the head, not the block. I used a 1/4" NPT fitting (brake booster elbow off an intake manifold)

Posted Image

just eliminate the (intake) banjo that's for heating the breather port.

Thanks for those, H! I will work to replicate your work, as I'm sure it's tried and true. That helps out quite a bit... especially the pictures for reference.

Did you use the newer T-stat housing or the older??
