Hello to all,
I recently picked up a 01 V70 T5 like the topic states for fairly cheap (under 3k), it has 145k on the clock and needs a bit of attention like the headliner is torn but I'm fixing that this weekend.

It runs like a top, compression is good, turbo spools fine and besides the headliner the interior is perfect (not my first Volvo, the wife has an 01xc).
So now to the question. Unknown to me at the time of purchase the owner didn’t let me know about the shift flare from 2-3, I did drive test drive it but it didn’t flare at that time.

So far I have done a trans drain and fill, the fluid was black but not burnt and now it still has the 2-3 flare that happens every shift once it’s warm, not when it’s cold with the added bonus of the occasional 3-4 flare now, and the B-4 replacement.

I've read allot on this site as well as others on what to do and expect from this tranny, needless to say I don’t have very high hopes.
The way I see it, I have a few options.

1) Replace the tranny with a volvo referb at around $5k
2) Have it rebuild at a shop $25-3500 and who knows if it will last very long.
3) get a used one from a yard, with a warranty of course $500-1k
4) Drive it until it fails while saving up for a manual swap.

Im not sure where to go with this, I know the swap is not simple but I know my way around a tool box, my father was a master diesel mechanic for 25 yrs, the issue for me is time (small kids, career and a misses) and $$$.

I've contemplated picking up the junk yard tranny, doing the swap in my garage and offloading it to someone else, making a little money on it and hunting down a V70R or 850r wagon with a manual.

Any advice would be helpful.

No manual swaps For these vehicles! Unless you get almost a complete front end clip.

Not much you can do, maybe part it. Was this the one just talked about the other day with black interior?

Pouring several thousand dollars in to a 10 year old car to fix one issue doesn't seem like great sense.  I'd do a junkyard swap (and cross fingers) or sell it as-is and stop your losses.

Major waste of time swapping a used tranny. Most places that give you a warranty won't sell these. Erie won't...

It's a parts car or find someone else to offload it onto. Maybe trade it in to a dealer that hasn't ever seen the 01-02 volvos

Delete,
There has been a successful manual swap in the P2 chassis but it requires IPD to do a ecu tune, I have priced most of the parts and the cost would roughly be a bit over $2k.
I have located a few used trannys in the area that come with a 30-90 day warrantee for around $800.

What would something like this be worth in the present condition?

Who did a tranny swap that actually worked out? I only know of one and that didn't work correctly.

idono $1K maybe, not many people want 01-02 automatics.

Tranny swap with a junkyard unit is a BAD idea. Unless you can locate one that had the trans replaced with a newer Volvo unit, but good luck finding one.

If you know how to do your own work a used trans isnt a bad idea. Volvo saab dismantler offer limetime warranty on all there parts. I have it on my trans and engine, but for an 850 not a newer p2 so im unsure im same applies.

I hope they don't sell 01-02 trannys. If they do then I bet the warranty is VERY short or sold as-is.

01-02 automatic=worthless

(unless replaced with new/refurbished Volvo direct tranny)

The manual swap was done by LloydDobler over on Sweedspeed, he has a 2004 C70 and dropped in a manual from an 02, did the reflash that he got from IPD with his softloader.

You need a complete front end clip from a T5M or a new tranny from Volvo.

No other option, unless you are up for te high risk option of a used tranny if you can find one.

The software tune only works on the c70? Why would that be?

Let's not make claims that are no longer true. The '99 and later cars have VIN and immobilizer encoded ECU's, and they also are coded for manual and auto trans. However, if you look in the Performance forum, you'll see that Lucky at ARDideas has just learned how to clone an ME7.x ECU, and he can also change it to a manual ECU. He needs a manual ECU to start with to get the code right, but once there, he can build you a manual ECU, then import your VIN number and the immobilizer number into your ECU, or he can clone an ECU for you and you'll get the manual capability. To do this, he has to have your ECU to get the immobilizer code. I have a manual, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Know of someone who has a manual '01 V70 T5, and it is a wonderful car. Look for the thread on ARD tune. Lucky posted today, and he still isn't certain exactly how it will work, and he doesn't yet know quite what it will cost, but contact him.

This has only take place in the last few weeks. Previously, Chilled Man on Swedespeed tried this on an '04 XC70, and he could NOT get the ECU to do anything but run in limp home mode. That was last year or two, but now the capability is here, or will be within months. I don't think I am exaggerating, but contact Lucky at ARDideas.com, and see if I am right. And since you are in Washington, it won't be too hard, since Lucky is located in Portland.

Lucky is still working on it as a matter of fact. See his thread in Performance and Modifications.
He is getting there though.

Thanks for the info, I'm glad to hear Lucky is approaching a fix for this, I'm still debating on whether or not to do a manual swap. It seems that a manual swap will cost quite a bit more than dropping in a low mileage used auto. I was able to find one with 43k on it and a 9 mo warrantee for less than 1350 shipped.

I really enjoy the Volvos and am very impressed with the T5 power and torque but I may just drop in the used trans then off load it to someone else and cut my losses. Then I could find the wagon that I want (3rd row seat, Manual trans, T5 or R) and start from there.

I would just wait and see if a manual tune ever comes out from lucky. If so then you can do a manual swap and be all set....

It's a risk but better then lossing thousands on reselling it.
