What is electronic throttle module? Is is same as throttle position sensor?

In a word, yes. But it's more complicated than just understanding what it is if you own a 2001.

If you own a 2001 then you need to understand the ETM. Rather than rehashing it all here, I recommend you read this series of threads thoroughly. Read all of the posts in Don's ETM Room.

Bottom line, 1999-2001 models had a faulty ETM design that eventually fails. At this point you're almost certainly past the warranty replacement period that Volvo provided in a recall (10 years or 200k miles). And since that's the case, if yours fails, you can choose to replace it with the same Volvo faulty design or purchase an improved aftermarket version from Xemodex. Prices are about equivalent.

It's a electronic throttle, drive by wire, not a sensor. '99+ cars they have no throttle cable connecting the gas pedal to the throttle. And they don't all fail, I've got 167+K miles on mine, you need to make sure your ETM has updated software. It seems that failures were due to cruise control being used a lot and wearing the thru the contacts in one spot.
