I have done a few timing belts on my own 1995 850 and my neighbor's two S70s with no problems. My question is how different is (or what tools are needed) a timing belt and water pump replacement on an XC90? Is it the same thing just a different car?

- set timing, go past marks by about 3-4 teeth then back to the marks (counter-clock-wise)
- remove belt, rollers and WP if you want to do the WP.
- reinstall....
- set tensioner

easy to do like all the 850 and x70's except the cams are pre loaded now for the vvt.

If its VVT you need to go past the marks a full 90 degrees on the crank and come back to unload the VVT cam pulley.

Only if you want to, it's not needed...
I like having the spring loaded Ex. cam as it helps keep the belt in blade during install.

Yup, I agree. But for someone who may not be comfortable with the whole shebang being able to cut off the old belt, replace everything and replace is probably nice.

Extract from my 2008 3.2 6 cyl AWD owners manual:
Note # (7) Models identified by engine VIN code 39 sold in CA, MA, ME, VT, CT, RI & PA are classified as PZEV vehicles. The timing belt and tensioner replacement interval for these vehicles ONLY is 15 years or 150,000 miles / 240,000 Km's. MAXIMUM replacement time interval for all engines EXCEPT engine VIN code 39 is 10 years.
