Got mine up and running yesterday

Posted Image

It wouldn't start at first. Re-checked everything and then realized I had the floppy drive power plug plugged into the a chassis fan plug on the mobo. :arob: I thought that's what the plug as for because it was the exact same shape and the other plugs coming off of that particular harness were for the case fans. Soo, unplugged that and then she fired right up, luckily I didn't fry the motherboard. And the LED on the front of the case doesn't work. Don't know if that's a case problem or what. But I'm not going to care about that.

Got as far as updating the time and date in BIOS. After several attempts to install the OS and it freezing at "expanding windows files 0%", I got a warning pop up that the CD was corrupted/files missing. Today I'm going to see if my bookstore on campus has Windows 7 available to students with a student discount. It's to the point where I REALLY need my computer back for school.

That's a nice space, not overly huge, definitely functional. Thought of blowing that closet out to make the space larger?

I'd love to but, its still a rental property. House in on the way. And that is where the true fun will begin. Ive built my new desk on computer and plan to cut it on a CNC machine. at least the top surface.

And got it up and running last night.

Tossed in my old hard drive from my last computer and formatted it. So I have about 900 GB of storage in the tower and a 1TB external hard drive sitting on top. Still want to get a new video card and sound card for it, but other than that. I love it. :)

Anyone able to break this down for me? It has all the different kinds of memory listed, but I don't understand what it means.

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
System Model Dimension 2350
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1994 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Mitac International A02, 3/24/2003
SMBIOS Version 2.3
Total Physical Memory 768.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 355.53 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

I formatted the hard drive on my old computer that just crashed hoping I could hook it up to my TV again, but even after that and re-installing the OS, it still runs quite shitty, I think it's just done. I found this computer on CL for $75. Guy says it's all up to date and runs excellent. All I want to do on it is watch Hulu and download movies. Will that work? Literally that's all I need it for. So I can watch Hulu on my TV.

If I'm reading that correctly you have a 256mb and 512mb memory sticks in that thing, you may want to step up that memory a bit :)

That's not my computer, it was one I was looking at getting because I thought my old Dell that I was using as a HTPC was donezo, however, got it working again last night. Reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP, installed SP3 and 132 Windows updates. And put on TrendMicro Titanium antivirus.

I'll have to see how much memory that little Dell supports. I have 3GB of memory left over from my old tower that might fit, but I don't really feel like messing with it now that I got it working again. It does everything I want it to do completely fine.

I think its all personal preference, I like to to use http://xbmc.org/ for media centers and I keep it simple and usually run winXP if its going to be windows based. but your setup is pretty clean there :)

The only reason I'm using this one is because the Architecture program here at my school was replacing all of their computers and you could buy this computer with the OS, mouse and keyboard for $75 and you could buy 5 of them. I found some people who wanted one and a couple of them gave me a few bucks for the trouble, so it ended up costing me $25. So, just use it for this. But after having a htpc, I don't think I'll ever not have one now.

And thanks for the compliment. It's definitely real nice to have a computer hooked up to the TV.

Possibly - or isolation bays for HD, good venting / dsp cards, etc. Just good silencing practices.
Always thought about rackmounting my DAW in a desk, spreading components out to keep cool with little to no forced cooling since I never record more than 10ft away.
