I recently bought a down coat online. For some reason, the seller thought it was a good idea to wash it using floral scented detergent and it stinks. I tried washing it with my normal scent free detergent, but it still has this floral smell. Anyone have any ideas of how to remove the odor?

You bought a used coat?

Maybe take it to the dry cleaners, I'm sure they could do something to de-stinkify it.

Actually it's new without tags, a worn once/wrong size kind of deal, or so it was represented. I know, who buys used coats, but the cost of this particular one new is insane and would never be worth buying in a store.

A splash of white vinegar in the rinse cycle is supposed to remove fabric softner buildup, I often throw some in when washing towels (with the actual wash cycle) you could try that. plus new clean tennis balls in the dryer to fluff it back up. a couple extra dryer cycles on low might help air it out as well.

Dry clean it. Should get rid of any smell.

Also, you are not suppose to use any kind of strong detergents, or any kind of fabric softener on anything down. It will break down all the feather quills and will become flat.

I know this because I ruined our down comforter by cleaning it. Wrong move. Girlfriend made me buy another $200 comforter.

It's airing out on the porch today. I'll see if that does anything, but yeah, looks like dry cleaners might be the best option.

Me.
Why the fuck not? I saved $550 on the last used one I bought..

Oh yeah..and dry cleaning will help, but with down (i am assuming it has a nylon shell) the scent will take a while to completely go away. I am super sensitive to fabric softener myself..I HATE it and it never seems to go away..
