Made a stupid mistake changing CV axles on a 01 V70 XC. Driver side axle was stuck in transmission and I was about to drill holes and affix a slide hammer to the inner joint when it was suggested to try and tap it loose from inside using a extension through the driver side. I had the extension in there and tapped with a small hammer and thought to myself this is a bad idea. The owner of the car said "do you want a bigger hammer?" My reply, "I want to think about this a second because I don't know that this is a good idea." That's when I noticed tranny fluid dripping on the floor. Removal of angle gear shows me my problem...

Apparently the axle flange that the CV shaft goes into has a closed cap on the end of it to keep trans fluid from getting to the cv shaft. I managed to pop it loose and that's where my leak is coming from. So now the transmission gets to come out. Yay.

My question is...

Does anyone on here have any experience rebuilding the AW55-50SN transmission that is in the V70 XC's or with a shop that does? I would like to know if I can purchase that cap separetly, if it comes with a new differential, etc.

Thanks for any help that can be offered besides any insult to my inteligence and/or mechanical abilities. I've throughly taken care of that myself.

Jason

PS. Beat the hell out of the driver side CV axle with a slide hammer and that did the trick. My palm is still bruised from the slide hammer but atleast the axle has been replaced and the car drove great. Just leaks now :(

Couldn't figure out how to edit post but wanted to replace picture with this one. I did some work in msPaint to point out the part that is looose and causing the leak.

If you remove the AWD collar I think you'll be able to take a better look at where it might be leaking before taking the trans out. Wish I could be of more assistance, never been here though.

EDIT: For future reference, if you have trouble getting the drivers side axle out, wedge a flat tipped pry bar between the axle and the trans and turn with a wrench, it'll come out every time.

For one that tranny fluid looks real bad! Need to change that out ASAP..

Also, I'm assuming this is looking into the beve lgear spline. That cap should not matter as the shaft should be sealed with a rotating seal internally of the bevel gear flange.

That is a picture of the axle flange and the connecting sleeve. The fluid has been drained and wasn't that bad. That fluid you see has mixed with all the grime and rust that gets between the angle gear and trans. The cap that the arrow points to is inside the transmission and is what keeps fluid from getting to the passenger CV axle. The cap is definitely been popped off and and if grab it with a telescoping magnet you can see it move around and the fluid leaking past it. Volvo doesnt use any seals on the axle itself. There is a seal on the outside of the collar and one on the inside that seals the collar to the flange.

Transmission is almost out. Should be out today and I'll pull the bell housing off and see if the cap can just be popped on. Maybe sealed with some JB Weld or ATV but not sure yet. Otherwise I think it's part of the differential because it doesnt show up in any parts break downs of the trans. I can get a new diff for $260 though so that wouldn't be too bad.

There should be a seal between the axle shaft and that housing, it's a small one.

I haven't seen a seal that would seal on the axle. Here's a shot of the axle in the flange. As you can see there just isn't any room for a seal between the flange and the axle. There can't be one after because there is no surface smooth surface for one to sit in.

This is a pic of the driver side flange and you can see the cap in place and how it keeps the CV axle completely sealed of from fluid and the inside of the transmission.

Here's a shot of the driver side flange with said cap in place. You can see that that cavity stays sealed and dry.
