Hey guys, I dropped my driveshaft because I need a new one and I'm going front wheel drive for a while, but I am getting a vibration, but I can't quite figure out why. Any ideas ?

It kicks in about 30MPH and its a mild steady viberation. I can't quite figure out if it's coming from the front or rear. I tried gently applying the brakes while on the highway to see if was a brake thing and to see if it went away, but it did not. Thats all I got for ya.

But let me ask a dumb question, how far back towards the rear does the shaft come off. Any body have photos of a dropped shaft. I don't think I did anything stupid BUT I do want to ask.

Could easily be a tire balancing issue.
Any snow packed into the wheels?

I ran without a driveshaft on my '04 XC70 with no issues. As long as you have the driveshaft out there really isn't anything else (in reference to how far back you need to go)

BEJinFBK Bite your tounge, there is no snow here yet, but I will have my wheels looked at, though I didn't notice any wheel weights missing.

Jeph430, I didn't think I messed that up but I just thought I would ask.

thanks

Wheel balance, tire condition and wheel condition should be considered first. Then the front axles should be checked for excessive play.

You always start with the wheels and tires and work back from there

Wheel bearing? Vibration or something slower?

You start with wheels and tires and go from there.
Once the propshaft is removed, in theory (and in practice), the entire car becomes much smoother and quieter.
By design, there is always some vibration going on with everything hooked up (unless the car is brand new) as the power is being transmitted thru a series of gears, U- joints and shafts.
Once removed, all you have remaining are the two front drive axles so it should be as smooth as a FWD V70 and anything minor that you may have not felt before will show up now.

Start with wheel and tire (out of) roundness and balance
