I'm starting to do some research on my next set of tires for the spring and from a bit of reading it seems like Michelin Pilot Super Sports are a great tire. Looks like they provide exactly what I'm looking for: great dry traction, good wet traction, decent treadwear (300). In addition, from the reviews, they're relatively quiet for a performance tire and the ride quality is good.

Has anyone used these tires? Any opinions on other tires with the same qualities?

Hankook Ventus Evo 12 k110 - I have loved these tires and I'm very happy to see that prices for them have come down. I've now used them on 3 or 4 cars and the S60 will be getting a new set of them again. Best fwd performance street tire for the money in my opinion. I'm also amazed at how long they've lasted despite my abuse. The wet weather traction is pretty good considering how great they are as dry weather tires. Road noise I can't speak to however. Most of my toys are gutted so noise isn't exactly a factor I use.

Budget? Goals? Etc.

Michelin PS are fantastic but at the very high end of the scale. For a decent mid-range tire I'm all for the General Exclaim UHP - 380 treadlife, look decent, solid ride.

My thoughts exactly. You get a killer discount when you buy them from discount tiredirect as well. It's a great tire and is relatively quiet. Sticks like glue to hot pavement but be extremely careful if/when it is cold and wet outside (cold = <50 degrees) I'm getting a set for my solars after the good luck I had with the volans.

That temp warning is actually a good point. Here in Arizona there really isn't a worry but I def get spin in the cold mornings lately. BTW - Hankook in general has come a long way in the past few years so take a look at see what you like.

The Budget is flexible. Those PSS's are on the upper end of what I'm looking to spend, though I think skimping on tires is pretty dumb.

What I'm looking for was listed in the OP: great dry traction, good wet traction (I'm in Seattle), with decent treadwear. Secondary priority is ride quality as my IPD springs aren't the nicest to the butts of my passengers. That and the roads around my work are absolutely horrible.

One more thing - I recently changed from 215/40/17 summer tires to 215/45/17 snows and the increase in sidewall meat helped a TON in the ride quality department. As far as performance goes - will moving from 40 to 45 of the same tire type create more roll/sidewall flexibility or will the difference be negligible?

Then he will be avoiding this tire since for at least half the year it doesn't get above 50 degress in the Seattle area, and we are known for wet weather. :)

Not that you would notice on the street. I run 40 series on my race wheels, but the Volans I run 215/45. You should be fine staying with that size.

My Continentals have been pretty good in the wet weather, but I don't like the overly cushy feeling. I loved (and miss) my BFGoodrich G-sports, but those did not like the wet weather.

If swapping from 40 to 45 helped a ton in ride quality then it was strictly due to a different rubber and/or air pressure.
There really shouldn't be a noticeable difference. Unless you track the car on the weekends.

I've had great luck with goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric, I live in Bremerton and have had no issues in the wet but snow/ice will make you cringe. Though I recently heard they are being phased out, and the treadwear isn't great (240 I think).

Nitto Invos. After a lot of research I decided to run these tires. They don't have quite the treadwear rating you wanted, they're 260, but they lasted me two summers. One of those summers I drove from Denver to Boston and from Boston to all over the east coast (about 20,000 all told) and I still could run them for another half season. The road noise is almost nill, the wet traction is about a 7 out of 10 and the dry grip is amazing.

They're 133 a piece, the only bummer is that they don't make anything smaller than a 225/r17

Seems like a decent tire. I'll do some more research on the Nitto's. Does anyone here run 225's on Volans? I assume there are some pretty noticeable rubbing issues?

I have yet to find a tire that could be the Goodyear Eagle GT. amazing traction, sidewall flex (or lack of), wet traction. Nothing I have used (GFgoodrich g-force twd2, hankook evo v12s, michelin PS2s, Yokohama avs es100s, fuzion ZRi's, sumitomo zti, conti pro-tontact, and a couple more) has been a better tire. AND at $118 for 225/45/17 they are hard to beat for price too.

Try the Eagle GT's and don't look back.

These are availbe in the rare 225/40/17 size, perfect for those with 17x7.5 canistos/propus wheels, will keep the aspect ratio relatively close to 215/45. If i get 17x7.5 wheels these are the tires im going with. Never saw it till now, i say those treads look nice and the compound looks sticky!

I like Kumho ecsta AST. I currently use them in 235/40x18, and have used them also in 235/45x17 ASX. Excellent wet & dry traction, I also actually used them all through the last two winters, although I wouldn't recommend them as winter use for FWD. Good tread wear. Much better wear than the Sumitomo's I had previously, which would also blow out the sidewall at the slightest hint of a pothole.

i was looking to get those in 225/15/17, but the only thing that i read is that after 20k miles the sound is terrible? any opinions about that?

I'm going to echo my question from earlier before: is running 225's on Volans a stupid idea? Will there be a major rubbing issue?
