Hi there,
I previously had a nicely tuned 278 hp '98 S70 2.0 T5 manual (225hp stock) and I was pretty happy with it until I decided to upgrade..
I sold it and now have the option of buying a '99 S70 2.3 T5 manual (239 hp stock..) with newly rebuilt engine and turbo due to a previous oil pump failure , or a '03 S80 T6 with stock engine, transmission and turbos. Both cars are at around 110.000 miles and they sell for a similar price (the S80 is a bit more but that's not important.)

The cars will be driven in Turkey where there are no enforced speed limits so 150+ mph is possible on most freeways most of the time and I usually do drive at those speeds (at least twice a week.)

I also wish to do performance upgrades to these cars; namely brake upgrades, performance exhaust, chip tuning and if I get the S70; a turbo upgrade. If I get the s80 I'll add a transmission cooler and a fluid flush prior to doing anything else..

My question is; which one of these cars will be more reliable after I mildly modify them, and will the performance differences be huge especially in terms of in-gear acceleration and top speed (0-62 is not that important although my previous S70 was capable of doing this in 6.2-6.4 secs according to OBD monitoring.)? Please feel free to advise and comment freely. Many thanks.

Go with the s70. I have 160k on mine with mild mods, still running like a champ. there is more aftermarket for the s70 and honestly is just a better car. all in all, it will come down to which you like driving more though.

I would say the s70 all the way, if your looking for spirited driving you will better enjoy having a standard, also i believe the s70 has more potential atleast bang for your buck wise anyways. Plus you are probably somewhat familiar with the 70 series from your previous car.

I personally would go for the s70 strictly for simplicity and I personally like the look of them, but the s80 isn't exactly a turd, lol its that the trans can't handle what the motor is putting out. But there are several ways for this to be handled. there is some one on this forum that has dealt with the trans problem forgot the name though. I am sure he will post up here soon enough. and as for looks there is a dude from the Philippines that made his look damn good. hopefully some one can put links to both these guys so he can make an informed decision.

Many thanks for showing interest in my post and your comments; my s70 was much quicker than a stock T6 but that's probably due to the transmission type difference; not sure how the T6 would be with a sports exhaust and chip mods etc., however let me spice up the question a bit; how about a S60 T5 (2.3) as an alternative, it's an auto as well but I believe it's a much stronger transmission than the T6s?

S70 for sure. Unless you plan on doing serious upgrade to the trans on the T6.

being that i have owned both the S80 and currently s70 the s80 is not a slow car that being said its a piece of S.hit as a car itself. it has a GM transmition with 4 speed Select stuff. and more electrical problems than a snowstorm lol. sadly you are looking at some of the trouble years for volvo. Late 04 and up, or Early 98 and prior are the best years. things that should be adressed are Electronic throttle body 99-2004 recall some cars will still show that recall active some wont. if it goes out and isnt coverd part costs over a 1000$ plus you have to pay for software and a bunch of other BS to program it to the ECM. i work on s80's and 70's almost everyday and i will say that 99 and up cars are very software driven main reason i dont like them. but if i had to choose i would pick the s70 primarily cause its a manual and and its a far better car electricaly plus it better handiling etc. i would choose the s80 if i was gona do alot of highway driving as it is amazingly comfortable on long drives. and its still gets up and goes if you put ur foot down. good luck

Not to mention the S70 will outlast the S80 even if it was modified.

ok I should stay away from the s80 then :) how about s60 vs. s70 ? Does a 2001 S60 suffer from electrical problems etc. too? Many thanks again for your interest in the topic, I really appreciate it.

1999 S70's and up use the same engine management systems as the 2001 s60's I believe. For the most part, volvo started having more problems with cars once ford bought them

Ps you are posting on a board that primarily focuses on pre-ford cars. It's kinda like having an apple judge an orange.

The S60 is fine if you acquire it with a manual transmission. The auto tranny not so much.

Hello :) I bought the s80 because its acceleration and driving was much better than both the s70 and the s60, but now I have to

1- solve the tranny issue to prevent it from breaking on me, any suggestions besides a 3rd party transmission cooler?
2- do a stage0 tune before chip-tuning and adding a performance exhaust etc. , what is the list of parts I'll need to change?
