Just got a 98 v70xc for 1000 bucks, just needed a new fuel pump. Im looking to do a few things to it and was wondering how much power the stock internals could take?

A lot depends on driving habits. You can force an engine thats stock, or you can baby an engine thats over built. If you drive hard, I would say the engine is good for 280 hp. If you drive like a sane person closer to 320. Welcome to the site and throw up some photos of the new ride.

Thanks for the welcome! glad to be a part of VolvoSpeed. Wow thats more than i was expecting, but then again Volvos are iron horses. I like to think im a pretty responseable driver. i try to stay away from the rev limiter in fear of blowing something up but ill go there if i have to. Ive got a list of a few little bolt-ons i want to do (as soon as i get stage zero taken care of) like IPD's H/D TCV and there H/D CBV, plug wiers, intake, coil, things like that but mainly im wanting to feel the turbo more. Any suggestions on how i can do that? Thanks again ill have some pictures up soon.

Only differences from the 2.3T are pistons/rings, different turbo made to spool lower (along with weaker WGA, and lower boost pressure), and it's on 4.4 instead of 4.3 being a '98. Technically, the boost pressure control valve is smaller as well, and the exhaust system/cat is different. I would say if you drive hard off the line, worry about the driveline before the engine - though Joe's car took some hard launches before he blew the differential up.

280hp (crank) is really just a 15G/16T with a tune, exhaust, and intake, with premium fuel. That's not anywhere near "maxing out" the engine at all. Depending on what you do for a turbo, management, and fuel, and how hard you drive it, the engine itself will be fine to 350hp (crank) if you're willing to push it that far.

You bought the XC, which is AWD. The first thing you need to do is make sure the AWD is functional. If all 4 tires are the same brand, size & wear then you're probably in good shape. It is very important that you maintain good tires in even wear condition.

The easiest way to get good performance is add a 16T (yours has the tiny 13g), white or green injectors and a tune (IPD/ARD) for 12-14psi, which will bring you up to about 230WHP, respectable for a otherwise stock XC.

The MSD coil is a waste of money.

If you push it beyond that, you will likely toast the transmission, and perhaps the bottom end.

The front tires and rear tires are two different brands. Rear's are uniroyal and the fronts are brand new bridgestone. Why is that bad?

Because they run a totally different type of AWD system than the x70s, and despite the difference in tire width, they maintain close enough diameters that it is within the acceptable variation for the AWD system.

and the fact that they cost upwards of a 100K, and are almost race cars would probaly also play a major role . a customer of mine that buys alot of carbon fiber has a 997 turbo with 700AWHP runs 335 in the rears  not tryin to thread jack just thought i would add some usless info for fun haha

Alright thanks guys. Im sort of new to Volvo, my friend had an old 740 turbo and that was my first experience. It was pretty quick for a two ton car by the time he wrecked it Posted Image , liked them ever sense.

lol Thats not fair Che. You get +1s for saying that an LPT motor is good for 320hp.... when a while back I had about 5 or more guys tell me I was wrong for saying 20psi on a bone stock LPT with a 3076R/50 trim (400hp+) is pushing it. Too Funny.

Now, a tune is pretty important when upgrading the turbo to a 16T and upgrading the injectors, right? Ive never really messed around with tuning or anything.

A tune allows you to use the upgrades that you had installed, such as a 15g and larger injectors.

Now personally, I disagree with Hussein on the MSD coil. I've seen dyno charts that show a slight improvement in power with the MSD coil vs. stock.... At least with the NA motors

So i guess my plan now is to do that, 16T, green injectors, and an ARD white tune? That should get me where i want to be.
I agree on the MSD coil. Ive used other products of theres and most of the time its noticable.

The coil that is sold for 850/v70 applications is not going to out perform the factory Bosch coil, unless the stock coil is failing...
