It's not the battery, It cranks the just fine. It will start the first time every time, but then dies after about 3 seconds(when it's in the low 20's). If I try it again without waiting 2 minutes it will keep cranking but will not start. Not sure if it sill giving error code's. And yes I did pay someone to do this, I might break down and bring it to a Volvo dealer. Problem is the closest one is about 30 miles and it needs to be cold for the problem to rear it's ugly head.

take out the fuel pump relay bring it inside at night, put it back in in the morning, if it starts up like new, you should change it.

Great idea thanks, I went to take the relay out from the (Main Fuse box) and (I might be dumb), but I could only find a 20 amp fuse for the fuel pump/ Ing coil. The only relays I found in the main fuse box were #1 main relay #2 Air Pump #3 Starter Motor and #4 AC Compressor. I there another place I should be looking?

I believe you have to pop off the plastic cover (held by a couple screws) that surrounds the fuses and the relay should be under there. Pretty sure this picture is correct. (quick google) So the fuses that you currently see would be at the very bottom of this picture.

Don't just replace it either as you can tell if they are bad by opening it. If you cant tell then post the images on here, just make sure to use the MACRO setting!!!

I got it out "straight up " Just like you said. I just didn't want to break it since I don't have the replacement and I would have been out of luck if I broke it. Thanks.

I pulled the relay yesterday, and replaced it this morning to see if it would start with a room temp relay. It's 21 degrees outside and it started on the first try, and kept running. Think it's time for a new relay, Thanks for all the help. You saved me a lot of money and time.

Glad it turned out to be something simple like that. :)

your welcome, have a good one!

also, when it gets very cold outside try keeping your tank above empty!
I have an AWD, so my fuel pump is different, but for me it helps a little.

Sorry to somewhat resurrect the thread, but I have a question. With this hard start issue when the fuel pump relay is cold, and you keep it inside over night and then put it in in the morning and the car starts fine, does it start fine the rest of the day? Or if the car sits outside for the day and the relay gets cold again, does it start hard again? I ask because I park in a heated underground parking garage, so it fires right up in the morning, but if I'm doing something, park it outside for a while and it gets cold, it starts hard, but then will start completely fine if I stop somewhere and shut off for a little while. Thoughts?

ya, normally if you leave it for an extended period (6-7 hours) it'll be hard to start. Im not sure exactly why it'll start if you leave it for only an hour or so.

In my case if the relay got cold the car would not start. If the relay was warm the car would start. I replaced the relay and have not had an issue since. I live in Chicago and it gets pretty cold.
