I'm trying to help my friend replace the door check device on his 1990 240. It's the part that allows the door to stop at two different position when opening it so that it doesn't slam on your leg, especially if parked uphill. It actually acts as the lower hinge, my question is, how do you remove it? There are two 12mm bolts holding it to the door, how is it attached to the chassis? How do you remove it?

I've never had to replace one, so not entirely sure of the method, but it does look like you will have to loosen or separate the hing from the body, the bolts for that are inside the kick panel area. You have to remove the plastic kick panel, unbolt the fuse panel and push it aside, then there is usually some heavy tar paper that you may have to tear/cut through to gain access to the bolts.

If for some odd reason your car has a foot vent on that side, you have to remove the rubber knob for that before you can remove the kick panel, just push the pin in the center of the knob up to get it out.

The hinge is connected to the door and inside the "A" piller, just remove the inner trim for access.Easy replacement if you get a complette hinge from the breaker's yard and support the door before removal. good luck.
