Your car has about 125k on it, and you got a code for a bad TC solenoid. I would change the solenoid first before buying and paying someone to change your transmission. The reason why i say this is because you said you flushed it 4 times in 8 years which is good (rather unecessary for 5k miles a year) and my auto died at well over 280k going on a half flush. It could be your tranny but with the care you been giving it and the mileage of the car it seems VERY unlikely.

roughly...I did my first drain & fill at around 150000 or 175000, did IPD flush at ~225000, then switched to synthetic at 275000 when I did a motor swap...this is a one owner car

When I bought the car at 75,000 miles, the trans fluid was slightly brown. And the car was driven around San Francisco (hills!)
I almost didn't buy it, but the rest of the car was in mint condition. I figured if I changed the fluid, I'd be OK.
For the last 8 years, it's always shifted kinda hard. And for the last year, a groaning noise has been coming from the trans.
Now it shifts terribly, it shudders, and within a few miles will lose all power in the trans. Odds point to a bad tranny, and I don't want to fool around with replacing expensive solenoids.

finally got the car back yesterday! They swapped the used trannie in for $900 labor, a professional transmission shop. I also had them replace all three seals on the A/T, and the RMS while they were in there (The RMS was bone dry they said, they almost didn't want to touch it...not bad for 125,000 miles!)
The trans has 118,000 miles on it, and i think has been sitting for 2-3 years. It seems to shift fine, although not 100% smooth. I am running some Auto-RX for 1,000 miles, and then will do a fluid flush with Valvoline Maxlife.
Nice to have the wagon back! 15 years old and running strong!

I wouldnt bother with auto-rx on the autos. Just change the fluid out 3-4 times with whatever and then keep up with the fluid changes.

the auto-rx can't hurt, right?
I like the Valvoline, and the MAXLIFE for cars over 75,000 miles seems to have a little extra that also can't hurt.
Luckily i wait for 1,000 miles to flush, because my shoulder is too sore from putting in a new radiator!!!
