Since when is Outlook required to get iCloud to work? Never mind - looks like it is here.

You can connect to Gmail and Google Calendar and ignore Outlook. Both of these can be used offline.

Well, its been over ten years, grown-ups still use it, and lets get off Moms, since everyone in this thread just got off yours.

I picked a pretty circuitous route and arguably cheated slightly, but I'm going to get there

It's going to be even funnier if/when you get an office job and your employer hands you a computer with Lotus Notes. You're going to be all like WTF uses this shit, I've never heard of it. Can't we get software backed by a big brand name, you know, enterprise stuff like Outlook?

 Just googled Lotus Notes, that actually looks kinda neat. And by if/when I have office job you mean when I have an office job. Hopefully it won't be strictly an office job as that would make it extremely difficult to do my job, but I will have an office.

You can't describe it, you have to experience it. Worst 2 years of my corporate life when I was stuck with Notes back near the beginning of my career.
