I've got both an 815 and an 816 lying around, though I've only tried the 816 since the code was written on it. It works with the amp and CD changer, but when I transferred my generic Cassette adapter from the 811 to it, it barely worked. The sound was distant and weak, whereas in the 811 it works perfectly (maybe not the absolute best quality, but it works).
I've heard of a kit that lets you connect the zune directly to the HU without using an FM modulator, or the cassette, but I can't find it anywhere...are there any other options?

Look at the USA Spec or Blitzsafe adapters.
They port audio in through the 6 disc changer input.
Great sound, but if you're currently using the optional
Volvo 6 disc changer, you'll have to ditch it if you want
the Zune to run into the HU that way. One or the other.

You can also hack the cassette adapter and solder it into the cassette. you would be able to play real tapes anymore, but who does?

Call me crazy, but I've got a Stevie Ray Vaughn tape in my 901 right now.

I used a tape adapter in a SC816 and it worked great. Sound level was very good and quality was okay too. It was even a cheapo $7 adapter from Target.
Risk the $7 and see if it works. I was happy with the arrangement for about 3 months, then I caved in and got an aftermarket stereo. Not a big fan of the aftermarket look though.

I'd do the tape route, but instead of caving in and going aftermarket afterwards, just cave and spend a few bucks on a 6CD-input iPod/Aux-in adapter. Factory look is key in these cars.
On mine, there's two inputs. When you push disc 1, input 1. Disc 2 is input 2. Both have RCA pigtails so you can do what you want with them.
