After many years of leaking shaft bearings (and thousands of miles) on my 16t, I finally got around to rebuilding it and am pleased with a leak free turbine shaft. After the rebuild and now being trained in on the my 16t, I want to modify it to be an 18t! I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible so I'm going to reuse my freshly rebuilt CHRA with a new 18t wheel and free up some cash for an R exhaust manifold, ipd downpipe, and exhaust. The question I have is whether to reuse my straight flange turbine housing, or buy an angled flange turbine housing. I've heard the angled flange housing helps keep egt's down and wondering if the difference in egt's is enough to justify the ~$160 price tag:

The compressor housing must be bored out to fit the 18t wheel.

will the super 6y0 wheel fit directly into the 16t housing or do you still have to get it milled. a place by me quoted me to turn my 15g to an 18t being that i suplied the wheel was 350$ you can get an 18t wheel on ebay for 55$ shipped. the quote for 350 was to do a complete rebuild, mill the housing and VSR balance. not to bad of a deal i think 400 for the entire conversion.

the inlet housing is different on the 18t. you would have to get your 16t housing milled larger. you would also need an 18t wastegate arm.

I used High Tech Turbo out of Salt Lake to balance my compressor/turbine assembly and I'll see what they'll quote me for a 16t comressor housing milling job to fit an 18t. If an 18t compressor housing was available I'd pick one up but they seem impossible to find. Anyone know what to expect to pay for milling out a 16t comp housing to fit an 18t?

You could also contact "Spanky" here on the forums regarding the 18T conversion, he has plenty of experience with these and is a good guy to talk to.

You should be able to buy (most designations of) TD04H compressor housing & wheel on eBay - I've bought a couple, it's not expensive

You will need to get the assembly balanced, though.

This 19T kit is under 200

This 19T housing & wheel is under $140

Just be careful with boost control, that's all.

I just talked to a shop out here in CA about doing this, they quoted me less than $100 to mill my compressor housing and balance the assembly, or about $375-400 to do the whole rebuild/upgrade if they provide the parts and do the labor. Very reasonable I think.

After I have mine done in the next week or so, I'll post back and let you guys know how it goes.

OP, if you need an angle exhaust housing feel free to PM me, I have a spare I can sell.

Even a 15g can be upgraded for a 19T ?

The difference there is that g series use one style thrust assy, T series use another. One is "superback" the other is "flatback", I forget offhand which is which, but as long as you bought the complete kit with seals, bearings & thrust assy, then yes.

T series has superback layout. You need to buy that type, but the Turbo itself does not matter, workshop will done the rest.
I have built 19T from a good shape 13G.

What grinding and sanding/smoothing bits did you use to do your exhaust housing port?

All TD04HL's have the same exhaust wheels, the TD04L's have a smaller exhaust turbine.

No porting/ grinding should be necessary using 850/x70 exhaust housing. Both the g & T TD04HL's used on 850/x70 -'00 are the same exhaust impeller size. If you try & fit a TD05 impeller, it would require modding.

My 20g impeller is TD05 in a 10cm2 housing - but the compressor was TD06 - until I increased it further with a Garrett 60-1 wheel & housing, which also required machining the CHRA for the wheel to clear the seat area.

Not surprising you raised your spool/boost onset time, with the porting you did. Did fixing the wastegate help, though? Having the arm drop out the housing meant that your wastegate flapper was not closing - that alone would raise boost onset rpm's.

Spool up time of course rised compared to the stock smaller TD04H -13C. It is a different world in RWD.. (don't forget... 4bunger & tune was for "stock" turbo)
Turbine ported/opened to (had to) match with '90+ newer style exh.collector which has been machined as well. (http://i238.photobuc...09/CIMG6370.jpg)
It is a gain compared to the stock opening if you know how looks, it's a common upgrade on TurboBricks world, with good feedbacks.
I not remember now how was act afterward, :( I had a lot of mod at that time, but for daily driving was perfect. I got smoother powerband and really strong top end.
Wastegate drop caused zero boost under every RPM conditions on that setup...
I had the same! turbo on 5cyl 740 and spools faster, earlier than B230FT, no problem here. (Pm me if you need more details.)
