Hey all,

Going to be installing LGSpeed rods into my 2000 T5 engine next week and am starting to source parts.

In essence the motor already has bent rods; so I have some LGSpeed rods going in while the motor is still in the car. The engine is a 2000 T5 out of a C70 and modified to work in my 98 V70. I've kept the VVT head and simply blocked the actuator, drilled out the front cam to accept the rotor bits... and some other little things to make it all work.

Car right now has a 19T turbo, ARD Blue Tune, 3" exhaust, and IK22 plugs.

Using Heavy Iron's old engine as my donor for the transplant. Plan on using the LGSpeed rods and maybe the pistons if they're the right size.

On order right now are a set of Toga Race bearings for the rods and I'm looking at FCP Euro for a lot of the other stuff since they have a nice 15% off deal for now.

That being said, I already have most of the cam seals for the 2000 head... I'm tempted to re-use the ones I just installed about 5k miles ago.

Anyhow, when it comes to the head gasket, pink sealant, o-rings for the pan, and whatnot... I could use some help. Given my current build and the fact this will be a daily driver with an occasional full-out run; but not a track car or anything like that... what do you all suggest for the head gasket?

Also curious to see if this is worth getting while I'm in there: http://www.fcpeuro.c...0-v70-9146266-1

For the "pink stuff" that joins our halves together, is it safe to say that this is good enough to use? :http://www.fcpeuro.c...sealant-1161059

Lastly, safe to say that this kit, http://www.fcpeuro.c...victor-30750783 in addition to the "pink stuff", 4 cam seals, head gasket, water pipe to head paper thing, and 12 head bolts... I should have everything to do this job?

Hope that you guys will be able to steer me in the right direction :) I'm trying to do this on a budget since it's my wife's car!

Cheers,
Prospero

You are installing the rods in a motor with bent rods? Or, you are installing the rods in another (older) block and then swapping the head from the '00 motor?

Plan A would be very bad.
Plan B is better - but, if the motor is coming apart, the bores should be checked & possibly honed, new rings or rebore. It really doesn't make much sense to reuse all old internal parts & simply swap rods & rod bearings, especially if it's NOT a plain jane stock setup.

I would only buy Volvo sealant, but that's me.

Head gasket set should come with cam seals, you should buy the set that goes with the head you are using, not the block.

Thanks for the reply!

So I have a 2000 motor with a lightly bent rod that it's my daily driver... been driving it for the past 4 months and it's been fine...just a little loud. There's a little knock in the oil pan that bugs me to no end.

My plan is to try to salvage the motor in the car since it's damn decent and I could make these repairs in a couple of days. The mileage seems good at 28-30 MPG and it idles smooth; so I suspect that it is not too far gone. No oil consumption or smoke... for all intents and purposes most people would never know that the sound is more than just loud injectors :)

Anyhow I've got Heavy Iron's old motor but I've been told that it was blowing smoke really bad. So I have to assume that it has something to do with bad rings since the head gasket was replaced just 10 miles ago. I've not yet put hands on the engine...hope to next Monday and do a tear down on Tuesday. Heavy Iron's motor seems to be insanely good on paper; but it's got a big case of the unknowns. My feelings are that I know that my engine should be just fine with the exception of the rods. Local mechanic that has done rod transplants before is confident that I can simply swap rods and bearings... maybe rings if we muff them up on the 2000 motor and be reliable again.

Trying to do this job reasonably well and easily...as well as on a budget. Wish I knew more about what is wrong with Heavy Iron's old motor... but I've got no real well to test it.

As for the pink stuff, I'll go for the OE stuff and yeah, for the head gasket... OE Volvo for sure. Same with the head bolts :)

Thanks sooo much for the input and I really appreciate the help!
Cheers,
M@

If you take the intermediate carrier off, i.e., so that the crank can be taken out, the large bolts for that are also use once and discard. Sounds like you are not doing that.

I agree with Lookforjoe on checking the cylinder taper, etc, never know what you might find.

Reinz sealer is gray, and goes on like the latex sealer you would use on windows, etc. You run a bead of it around the mating surfaces. I just used it on the installation of an oil pan, and it isn't bad, but I think OEM sealer is nicer. But... a tube of OEM sealer will just do one engine, and maybe a few drops extra left. Best way to install it is with a short roller, so it goes on in a thin layer.

If Heavy's engine has aftermarket pistons, there is a good chance that the rings are not the same thickness as Volvo rings, and you'd have to source them from somewhere else. Hastings is a good source of rings, you can buy them from the size alone.

I'd have no problem doing exactly what you have planned. I would definitely do a quick berry hone and a set of rings.

Only problem is it MAY be a lightly bent rod, but with a knocking in the lower end, you also could have spun a rod bearing. You'll know when you take it apart. If so, chances are the crank will need some attention.

If you run a quick hone and need new stock bore rings I have a set of OEM blue box rings. For a 96 2.3 HPT not totally sure but bore may be the same, someone else will know for sure.

I got them in case my cyls needed a touch up but they checked out perfect.

Thanks for the offer. Gonna roll OEM for now. MLS seems a little too nice for this budget build :)

Yeah, I'd say it does. The fire ring is sized for the block bore, so 83mm instead of 81mm. Meh, maybe you're right - for 2mm they say fuck it & make only one size
