I am waiting for a used transmission to be put into my 97 850 GLT. Although I didn't see any evidence of coolant mixing into the transmission fluid, I still am paranoid that there could be a slow leak that helped finish off this transmission.
Since it's the original radiator, as a precaution I am going to replace the radiator as soon as I get the car back.
SO, will it be OK to drive it 8 miles to get it home? I've heard that even a small amount of coolant can destroy a transmission? I may do a trans flush when I get it home too.

Did you find ATF in the coolant? I'd guess that if your radiator was somehow compromised, it would go the other way.

no fluid in the coolant.
I am replacing the radiator this weekend. not taking any chances with a new (used) transmission going in there.
I know the plastic usually cracks first on these radiators.
And kudos to FCP! I went to NAPA to order a Nissens radiator, they don't sell them but could get one from a Nissens dealer. They wanted $270, plus $10 shipping! I got one from FCP for $190, free shipping!

then you've never seen my car ;-)
I'm all for $200 insurance and a reason to drink a beer afterwards for something that will most probably fail within a few years (on the plastic side)

Are you saying that yours failed or that you are replacing just in case?

i am replacing the radiator just in case. There 'could' be the beginnings of a failure, but I can't be sure. It's quite hard to look at trans fluid and find a little bit of coolant mixed in. A few months ago I blew an upper rad. hose, the temp got pretty hot for a minute. That could easily have compromised a 14 year old radiator.
The radiator on my other 97 went out a few months ago. Both my 850's are the same age and almost the same mileage. I have noticed parallel failures on both. (the upper radiator hose blew the very next day on my other 850!!!!!)
These 850s can last forever, but their components must work. I err on the side of caution, as I want to join the 200,000 mile club for both of mine. :-)
