Hey guys,
I've posted a few times in the older FWD section, but this is my first foray into this segment. I purchased my first XC70. Its a 99 with 175k miles on it and is that beautiful dark green color. The paint and body is fabulous and the interior is super clean. It is not without fault however.

It has a severe exhaust leak where the down pipe has come apart where the clamp holds the flanged end to the turbo. I've been searching for a down pipe and the best I could find was an OEM part for $580! Could someone point me in the right direction here? I wouldn't mind an aftermarket DP or even entire exhaust if it could be purchased cheaper. I also have the dreaded ETS light, and I've been researching that. My first order of business will be to take it to the dealer to see if its had its software updated.

It has a check engine light on for 02 sensor, but the huge gaping hole in the exhaust may actually be causing those issues. If not, I can fix that. I think will be due for a trans fluid change as once it gets warm, it shifts harshly into over drive, or when the torque convertor locks and unlocks.

Overall, I'm quite happy with the car, and its very capable, as I bought it and drove it home in the blizzard last night from Cincy to Cleveland (with my wife following in our Malibu) and had zero issues.

Thanks for the help!

You either get one custom made or you can get one from EST http://www.eurosport...=VL-S70-exhaust Or CJ Yonther, but they are both are pricey if you are baulking at $500+. But to be honest I'd just look for a used one from any '99-00 AWD, if you just need a replacement...

i'd also check the build date on the label of the ETS/ETM - with the build date you can sort of guess how old it is

ex. 03W131503 - made in the 13th week of 2003

pretty sure all yellow label ones received the updated software

Update. On my way to my friends house about 2 miles from my destination, my temp gauge dropped, but it still ran fine. When I pulled into the garage bay and popped the hood, I noticed the dipstick pushed out and oil everywhere. When I pulled the dipstick out, it was like chocolate milk. So, I guess I popped the headgasket. I re-welded my downpipe though so when it goes back together with the new HG, at least it will be quiet.

Chill out for a second and rethink this....

Headgasket maybe but here is another idea that's more realistic:
It's cold, the PCV system is shot and you need a thermostat since yours is stuck open. All that combined would fit the bill, but that's just assuming those items are bad.

First up, would be a compression check!!!

Yeah, I will do that for sure. But the fact that I can see coolant leaking from the back of the head is a pretty good indicator. Also, the oil level is way, way high and looks like a milkshake. Are you saying that could be symptoms of something other than a BHG?

Yikes, coolant leaking from the back of the head is not a good sign. The cheapest and easiest way to check for a blown HG is to remove the coolant reservoir cap and watch for something that looks like ol' faithful.

If you're still unsure you can verify with a combustion leak checker like this:

Also found low compression in the No. 4 cylinder. Currently replacing the PCV system, timing belt, water pump and pulleys, and the ETM while I'm in there.

could be a broken headbolt between cylinders 3 and 4, it was that in my case. vvt hubs are tricky to get off. besides the stuff you listed, and if you are planning to keep this car, change out the upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses too, heater core, flush the intercooler out, you have work cut out for you.

there is a link to my project v70t5m so you get a idea of waht is involved.
good luck.

Yep, I've got a heater core to go in it too. I found the intercooler hoses are crap, so they're getting replaced as well.
