Hey fellas,

I have a tentative aggreement to pick up a 1999 Volvo V70 XC sometime this week. Thing is that the car currently has problems with the head, apparently it runs but has a cracked cam carrier. I had thought about sourcing a head and goign that route but I happen to have a complete 2.4T from a 2002 S60 that is very low miles and just sitting in my garage. Naturally I would like to use it if possible.

So a few things come to mind, I know they are similar in many ways but different as well. I am pretty familar with the S60 layout and by looking at photos I can see a lot looks the same but some obvious visual differnces as well.

Lucky for me, I think, the 1999 got ME7 and should be abel to run the VVT at least. From what I understand the change from 1998 to 1999 should make this swap much easier.

It also appears that they share the same coil over plug ignition compared to the older distributor setup so hopefully no need to mess with the can shaft ends.

So before I pick it up I'd like to get an idea of what I am getting into from some of you who have done this type of swap. It will be so much clearer when I have the car home to look at it and see the setups side by side. But in the meantime, can anybody fill me in on what will definitely swap or not swap. Hopefully we can keep this somewhat organized and updated so others might be able to use it in the future.

Here is the only pic of the XC and a pic of my donor engine.

Should be a direct bolt in from info that I've received.Probably just switch everything over from the old engine. Not sure if the cam sensor needs to be switched but I'm curious as to if it does. I have the same exact engine sitting in my garage (2002 S60 2.4T) waiting to go into a 2000 V70R when the weather gets warmer, so I'll be following this thread closely.

The thermostat housing passage casting seems different so that may need to be swapped from the old engine.

Thermostat housing changed in 2002. Instead of changing the thermostat only, you change the entire housing if the thermostat goes bad. Hose is different, and the tempreature sensor is different, but you could easily put it on your XC, just use your temp sender, and get an '02 hose.

This is all great info, just what I am looking to hear. It seems like this might just be a pretty straight forward swap. I had looked at some -98 models in similar situations but those seemed to be a more complicated swap. If all goes well I should have the title tomorrow and bring it home later this week.

Please feel free to add anything to this thread. I'll continue to update as things happen.

Have a great day guys!

BTW......What turbo comes on the 1999 XC70? I have a few other turbos laying around and might go ahead and upgrade while everything is apart.

13T angled flange IIRC....

just like any of the other TD04 volvos, you can swap whatever(ish), just need a tune for the selected turbo.

Ok, I thought so but wasn't sure. Like I said, a lot of my questions will be answered once I get it home but I am trying to get a headstart planning now. I have a few turbos to chose from, 13T with 50,000 miles, 16T with a few thousand miles and a brand new 18T from Spanky. Might just go with the 18T and Blue Tune as I also have set of Blue injectors laying around doing nothing.

Now do you think the OBX DP for a V70R/S60R would fit the 99 XC?

Should probably go ahead and do a fresh timing belt and tensioner now before the motor goes in huh?

Thanks!

Okay sounds like a plan to me. I went ahead and got the donor engine stripped down a bit just to check it out. Looks great but hard to tell anything specific without looking inside.

S60R/V70R exhaust, probably not.

I am pretty sure he is doing them locally and via mail in for ME7 as of the past week or two. adamjjohn203 is running one on his V70 as of today in the ARD tune thread.

I was also under the impression the V70 exhaust fit the XC, maybe not the 99-00 models? I know the newer ones fit various models. What are people doing for DP on 99 XC then?

I think I see now, looks like there was a change in exhaust from 97-98 to 1999-2000 based on EST downpipe selection.

I believe 97-98 were straight flange, and 99 a crossover year for angled flange, but not certain.

That's what the pics of the downpipes suggest. I might just use this oppurtunity to build my first DP. I have done a few catbacks and minor work on DPs(flanges, bungs, etc..) but never made one from scratch. Honestly though, I think I might be getting ahead of myself here. The first goal should be to get the car on the road with the new motor for the winter. Maybe over next summer I can start doing some mods but I am sure I will have my hands full just doing the swap here shortly.

As for the cam sensor, I am going to boot up VIDA and see what I can find out now.

That's good news. It's somewhat confusing though, under part #3, it lists CMP sensor up to 2001 (-2001) as one part #, and 2002 on up (2002-) a different part # that you highlited as Camshaft Position Sensor. Are CMP and cam position sensor the same thing?

I agree on just getting the car going and mod later. I believe that it's possible that some 1999 flanges were straight and some angled, as it was a crossover year. Also, how many miles on the 2002 engine?

Not sure of the difference of the -'01 and '02- cam sensors, just use the one from the car, and you should be fine. Volvo changed some sensors as they went along, so it is best to use the one for the car and ECU that will be powered by the engine.

Ah I see what you mean there, maybe there was indeed a change, sorry for the confusion. I think Wizzard had a good idea though, probably safe to use the one matched to the ECU being used.

Anyways, I went a saw it in person today and was a bit disappointed by the general condition of the car. It had a few more smashed in panels than I had anticipated. if it were in better shape i would have snagged it and might have even been able to fix the current problem without donating my 2002 engine. Here are a few pics, would you pick it up for $800??
