Can someone please tell me or put me up on game about these S70t5Ms.. I Had a chance to buy a 1998 S70t5M yesterday for $6500.00 and dude would not budge.. I thought that was a little much for the car, so i offered $6000.00.. he laughed and told me he could easily get 6800-7000 for the car, and the car sold(he didnt say how much) My question are these volvo's really worth that much? (114,000 miles) or did i just lose out on a hella fide deal? im so pissed i didnt get this car. Any input would be great? $6500 for 14 year old car with a 5 speed? im baffled.. and extremely angry at the same time... ! No sleep for a week... Ugh! FML!......

I helped one of my friends find a 98 T5M last year. Took me a couple weeks but I found one with 110k on it and he ended up getting it for $3000

Depends on the condition...for 6500 i would expect all major repairs completed, good records, cold a/c, a spotless interior, swirl and accident free paint, good tires...essentially a pretty damn nice car

I'm just going to leave this here. Ignore the flames and focus on the facts that are shared in the thread I've linked ot. You'll get a good understanding of what these cars should price at. Remember the OPs example in that thread has 214k miles on it so it's worth half the price of the car you looked at. $6k isn't a bad price but like Travis said unless it's pristine the price of $6500 is a little high.

And I'm assuming this is the car you looked at?

@Burn-E I just got done reading your tread... Very deep! and alot of good information, they're have been a few 1998 S70t5m here in Colorado and all seem to be going for that price.. and yes that is the Ad from CL... when i drove it, pulled like a raped ape! shift very nice and smooth.. ac worked, heater work, leather very clean, didnt see no mods, had a couple 3" holes drilled in the air box, ran a carfax, was a lease vehicle from seattle... history came back pretty clean! was small amount of oil bottom of car the plastic piece under neath... he said it was residue?? what do u really need to look for in these cars, to make that they havent been dogged/raced? Car is actually back for sale(called me back this morning)... now im second guessing..... is it worth that much he is asking for...

No.......

You are going to have to search around on the site for what to look for in these vehicles. Tons of topics, just remember that 94-98 are the same issues and 99-00 are pretty much the same (other then ETM and coil packs). Nothing special about a T5M other then it being a 5spd turbo.

Judging by what you said, and the mileage on the car itself I would pay 4,500 tops, maybe 5,000 if it was in Showroom condition.

Cars are worth the price your willing to pay. I just (today actually) bought a 98' S70 AUTO for 6,000 with 94K miles. Why did I pay that much you ask? Because the 80 year old women had a stack (well folder) of receipts dating to when she bought the car in 2000 off lease. In the last 2 years the timing belt, water pump, serp belt, dis. cap, spark plugs, rear main seal, abs module and a few other items were replaced.

I would rather buy a car for 6k that needs nothing than a car for 4k that needs to be stage zero'ed. A bonus on the car is you can eat off the interior its so clean! (Nada on the car was 5,900 or so)

Oh and garage kept helps in the NE winters =)

--- If you are going or thinking of paying big boy money for an older car make sure what tends to break has been fixed and you feel good enough to say it will run for atleast another 120-140k

i agree that that price is a little high, although i did just buy a 1995 yellow T-5R for $6,500 but it has a brand new motor (with recipts), all new lines (with recipts) and new shocks and springs (with recipts). the paint is showing for a almost 20 year old car, along with the interior but since it has a new motor and is a pretty rare car i thought $6,500 was a good price.

It looks like a very nice car and I have actually looked for a bright red T5M with no luck but they does seem high... In the end it is worth whatever you are willing to pay based on your inspection and desire for the car.

Some things to watch out for....With the v/c/s70 from 98 you really have to look for the power stearing and ABS module (and/or sensors), they usually go bad, and if the ABS goes you loose traction control and cruise control (all tied into ABS). also the "leather" in the door panels are notorious for stretching or coming unglued. Lastely most of the T5s I've seen always seem to have the same oil leak, somewhere on the back of the block either the turbo or an engine seal. But i have never seen one that did not leak, even if only a little.

That has just been my experience with the HPT models from 98, doesn't mean they all have those issues.

ABS module and oil return line or the other common leak areas are cheap and easy repairs. And the delamination is just a reality though if the owner was mindful and lucky it's possible to find door panels that were repaired under warranty and don't delaminate. That or buy the R leather inserts.

The first owner of my car (I'm the third), replaced/repaired the ABS module at an official Volvo dealership. The dumbasses put on a module with no traction control. Both ABS and cruise work fine, but there is no traction control. Not a big deal for me (I would have it turned off most of the time anyways...), but how does a dealership make such a stupid mistake and as well charge the guy nearly $600 for it?

Anyways...back on topic. As I said somewhere else, I paid nearly $6500 for my car too, but the maintenance record was immaculate - belts, seals, oil pump, brakes (302), brace, pegs, CVs, wheel bearings, springs, struts, XC seats, AC evap, R interior, heater core, control arms, engine mounts...the list goes on. I thought it was well worth it, and now more than 6 months later I have no regrets.

That was/is an awesome S70 and by no means typical. Sold though...and at an embarrassingly low price.
