Getting conflicting information on what the cut off month/week of produciton is.... or rather to say at what point does a car built in 2001 become a 2002 model year?

I've got literature that says july, august, and september. Anyone have any more specific information?

Thanks, Free T shirt to first person with some concrete data!

Actually, the manufacturer decides when the cutoff is. In the US it is usually the beginning of September, but there is no rule saying it has to be. I have seen some American cars being sold in June and July as next year's model.

I have seen Italian cars being imported and sold in March as next year's model.

Some governments may mandate a model manufactured in 2007 is sold as a 2007 model. I am not so sure about this, so I might research it a bit, but it would explain the 1997 S70 in Europe.

I'm decoding more ME7 files and since there is limited info in the file itself I have to glean what file I'm working with (sw serial number) by the production date.

However I'm getting one file that is week 32 of 2001 and to my knowledge that should be a Model year 2002...

Model year is simply a consumer-friendly way of designating a revision number. It is similar to the version number you see on many computer software products (Windows 7, Windows 8, etc.). The date on which a new model year will begin production is determined internally. It can be scheduled to coincide with a change in fiscal year or to happen on the same date each year, but it does not have to be.

While you can usually use the production date to figure out which model year you have, the correct way to determine model year is to look at the 10th character of the VIN. The production date is still useful, however. Changes may be made on the assembly-line mid-model-year to correct a problem. If a recall is issued to correct that problem on vehicles produced before that change was made, you would have to look at the production date to figure out if the recall applied to you.

Volvo is already producing and selling 2013 XC90s. I think the only way to get your hands on one right now is overseas delivery, but that may have changed. Regardless, you'll have to look at the production date of the specific model you're working with to figure that out. Isn't VIN encoded in ME7, though?

Contrary to popular belief the VIN number is nowhere within the code of the ECU. It is stored in the CEM but not the ECU.

There is a production week and date in the ECU as well as the actual day it was official programmed. For instance I just looked at one that was week 32 of 2001 (technically a 2002) but programming date was july 12 2005, indicating this ECU had been replaced at some point. So production date did not change but programming date did.

It can but that assumes I have a car with the CEM.

In this case I'm curious if it can be determined by ECM alone since I have 6+ Me7 ECU's here from salvage yard.

I don't know where you could find that info unfortunately. I would start here, but there's so much crap that it may take forever to find:
