I have the opertunity to get an engine with 80k on it for an amazing price. But here's the catch the engine has been sitting for 3 years, dry. I'm scared the insides have rusted by now and if I was to try and turn the engine by hand the rust on the piston rings could cause them to break or crack. I would obviously fill the engine with A very thin oil an let it sit for some time but I still have a fear of this. I need help, suggestions and an engine. Thanks guys.

Engine wont get rusted inside unless it had contact to water, the seals are most likley not going to be very good but it shouldnt be rusted.

Redo the all of the seals and fill the cylinders with marvel mystery oil, then turbo the motor over by hand.

3 years is nothing, if you wanna talk about some time, let's talk Land Rover motors! soaking them in marvel mystery for months on hand just to get them to move....

Although if you are really worried then you could pull the head, so that would let you look and the cyclinders, and the valve springs.

I would just put marvel mystery oil in the cyl and turn it over by hand. It won't take but a few turns...

I'm talking land rover as a lot of these old motors have sat for a decade or so without being moved.

Did the engine come from a wreck or did it get pulled because it had problems? Can you turn the motor now and feel if it is compressing? Take two hours and take the head off. Then you'll know what you are dealing with. Use a penetrating oil like wd40/liquid wrench/PB and spray all the rings until they are loose. Do this while it is out otherwise you're just installing it to rebuild it later. While it is in half you can evaluate if any rust has occurred with the valves, their guides and how bad the seats look.

Funny you should mention it I have an old '65 series 2a sitting in front of the house right now. An electrical nightmare, like most of them, it has sat for periods of years but once I track down all the parts it still starts and runs.

80K mile engine huh? Where was the engine sitting for 3 years? If it was inside your golden, i'd still run some lucas or marvel like the other guys said just to be safe.

Now had the engine been sitting outside, i would rebuild the head, you dont want valve springs breaking on you...and the seals would probably be completely junk.

Engine has been sitting inside, It will probably need valve seals and oil sump o-rings etc.

Ya sorry guys I've been away skiing. Ya under 80k sitting dry inside for 3 years. He wants 200 for it. Now here's the thing it has a cracked oil pan but he has a new one with everything bolts, seal. But if it was cracked for all that time wouldn't moisture get inside? I mean their has to be a little and for those just joining the thread I don't know if I'm going to rePlace my headgaskit or just drip in a new engine yet if I decide to fix my engine pm me I can give you the kids number only kicker is that if your not in the new England area it might be a hassle but I willet everyone know. Thanks

if the pan is cracked, and the engine was indoors with the cracked pan still on, then there isn't going to be much moisture in there. Was it cracked, or did a fragment fall out, leaving a hole in it?

Honestly, I would still just pop the head off and have a looksie...really easy thing to do with the engine already out...

I would throw down the $200, and take a risk with it, and just hope that it's fine...chances are that it is...i understand that not everyone is in the same position to do so, but if you can, then you should! and if he's willing to let you take the head off before you buy it, it's going to take you an hour, tops....spray some PB Blaster on the nuts overnight, and have at it in the morning.

if it's good, you pay another $100 to have the head resurfaced and cleaned, and a new headgasket, and you're set man.
