Well this morning I went out to find a puddle of oil under the pass side of the 854.

It turns out that the exhaust cam seal is leaking, from the looks of the oil build up under the timing cover its been leaking for a little while.

I have the Blue gates racing Timing belt on the car now need less to say it was covered in oil.

I know drying oil will tend to crack and dry out rubber.
But does anyone think the gates belt will be safe, or should I just drop the $27 on the OEM belt to be safe..

What would you do?

Depends how long it's been leaking on the belt. I would take it off and clean it with say dish soap if it has only been a little while...

Thats what I was thinking, only because this belt is only 6 months old and it looks like it only been leaking for a week or two.
The blue on the belt isnt even discolored.

Ill give it a shot... thanks :D

If you are going to take the belt off, why wouldn't you just replace it?

No thats not the reason, I just figured because the belt is basically new and there was no physical damage aside form the oil on it.
Just wanted to know What were other peoples thoughts on re-using it thats all.

After buying the Seals, Loctite, and 2 quarts of oil
I just dont have the extra $35 till the end of the month to get a new belt. Still playing catch up from X-mas ^_^

I trust your guys opinions and advise, If you guys said "dont trust it and replace it" Id pull the battery, and let the car sit until I got the belt..

Won't soap actually dry out the belt and make it more prone to cracking?

washing it off with some warm soapy water for a few minutes probably wont dry it out! unless your soaking it for a few days with 90% harsh dish soap, I don't see it being a problem. It wont take much or long to get the residue off....

It's a kevler belt at that!

NOW the question becomes - When will you replace this compromised belt?

What mileage? - What time?

Umm at the same time you would with any other belt...

Unless someone wants to try out and see how long a kevler belt lasts!
