We're rebuilding the cylinder head after a bad coil caused unburnt fuel build up and thus a burnt ex valve . After removing the bottom half of the sandwich head, these pieces came out. What are they? Any insight is much appreciated!

Car: 1995 Volvo 850 NA automatic EGR

Also, the head was replaced only 15,000 miles ago with new valve guide seals after being milled down and hot tanked. The pieces are brittle and I can break them with my fingers.

I have never seen the inside of a Volvo's head nor the valve installation. However when repairing and overhauling motor cycle engines the facing of the valve seat as shown in the picture can become delaminated as shown in the OP's pictures and be just as fragile. Most often than not in an aluminum head the valve seats are made of steel and pressed into the valve surround area.

It could be the angle of the picture but the pieces seem flat, and with the carbon line on it I'm still leaving towards exhaust gasket.

No it's not any kind of gasket. My father mentioned sometimes when milling down heads, machinist install these kind of spacers under the head bolts. This would be done to ensure the bolts do not bottom out in the block.

Yes, it is magnetic. We were sweeping inside the head with a magnetic wand looking for any bits of metal and found these. They are the exact diameter to fit around a head bolt. Just asking around cause I've never head of such spacers but we'll call our machinist and ask if he remembers installing them. Thanks, everyone for the feedback!
