I have a friend that sells Volvos, I've known him for probably 15 years when my mom bought a new V70 from him back in 98. He took a liking to the little kid with encyclopedic knowledge of cars lol. And about 5 years ago he called me up and said dude I just got this C70 in that you have to come look at! The rest, as they say, is history... lol :D

But I joined up here as soon as I got the car, and I've literally learned most everything I know about Volvos from this site.

This doesn't belong in Performance

If you're motivated to work for yourself, rather than pay $$$$ for someone else to do it, and enjoy getting your hands dirty, then you will find the means to do it.

Research, ask questions, more research. Then do it!

I've owned used Volvo's since 1981. I learned how to fix & mod them because I enjoy it.

This is definitely a good question to get some background for the regulars around these parts.

I bought a 94 855 about 7-8 years ago and did the whole 5spd thing and so forth. After that I have lost count to how many Volvos I've owned since then. Thanks to so many people not changing timing belts, PCV systems and their ATF I have had more then my fair share of work due to these people not maintaining their vehicles.

Volvo tech training is where I gleaned most of my base knowledge. For beginners getting a copy of Vadis/Vida and start reading is my advice. After that it's just getting under the hood and do work.

While not as knowledgeable as some others on here about technical details of Volvo engine design and build, I have always been a DIY and hands on guy. I look, figure it out, and do it! I took auto shop in high school which further fueled my passion for cars, as well as reading numerous magazines such as Popular Hot Rodding, Hot Rod mag, and the like. My first engine swap was in the late 70's when I was15 years old, a 1968 Mustang fastback with the 289 ci V8 engine, and have done maybe a dozen engine swaps on rear drive cars over the years, with a few engine rebuilds.

My love for Volvo's started when I applied for a sales position at a Volvo dealership 12 years ago, and have been there ever since. My product and mechanical knowledge of Volvos was gained by training for what my job requires, the Volvo forums, and also walking through the shop and watching what the techs are doing and occasionally picking their brains.

I must say that cars are in my blood, as my brother, my father, and my grandfather were all involved at one time or another in some aspect of the automotive/automotive repair business.

I'm probably more helpful on the SS forums with my product knowledge than on the more technical VS forums, but enjoy learning from both none the less and trying to help others.

I bought my first and only Volvo/car in May 2009 and shortly thereafter joined a gamit of Volvo forums. From there I lurked and learned and met some awesome people. Many of those are local guys with extremely friendly personalities from whom I have learned an immense amount from.

Same with the AWD... if you don't actually own one, or never have, or plan to do so, then shut your pie hole.

been working on and modding cars since the mid 80s..and have owned numerous Volvos..mostly learned by working on them, trial and error and recently, looking stuff up on-line. Anytime you get stumped do a search on here or Mathews and just about any repair oriented question will be answered. It is so much easier for DIY now than 25 yrs ago!

I only messed with Volvos becuase my best friend has always had them.

I really never owned one until more recently when I got my hands on a 04 S60R and then an 95 850T5-R. Personally, I have learned almost everything about Volvo's from myself through testing and sometimes I figure out interesting things other times not so much. However, they are pretty much the same as every other car ever built with a few Volvo only quirks.

Originally my Dad, then I when I got the 850 I started reading forums, and with basic mechanical knowledge, I dived into an engine swap and manual transmission swap by myself in my parking garage. I would say that is where I learned most of what I know today, or where at least most of my knowledge stemmed from.
