i have a 1993 850 and for the past year my car will not shift into 1st gear. when i put the car in gear and accelerate it starts in 3rd gear. i coded the car and came up with code 1-1-4 ( program selector open circuit or short circuit ) and i also go tcode 2-2-2( s2 solenoid open circuit ) have any of you seen this before and if so how do i repair this

There are solenoids within the trans...if they malfunction...or one malfunctions, it can cause this ....u can get used ones from an old trans, or swap in a used working trans

I am by no means an expert on this, but my old car had problems with solenoid 2, and the research I did at the time led me to believe that the whole transmission valve body needs to be replaced, which means you might as well change the whole transmission.
There are people who claim you can just replace the solenoids (which are not sold by FCP or any other part store) but I have never seen a write up on how it's done.

You dont need to replace the valve body.
Also you don't need a write up/guide because it's pretty straight forward.
Drop subframe down enough to get to the cover, remove cover. Unbolt te solenoid, install the new one and then put it back together. Pretty easy..
BUT it might be a bad PNP switch, which are also easy to clean by removing and rebuilding.
The main question is when did you last change the ATF and how does it look now?
